Marjorie Hicks Oakes

Marjorie “Margie” Hicks was born on October 26, 1947 and grew up in Tallahassee, Florida where she graduated from Leon High School. After completing some classes at Florida State University, Marjorie moved to Pensacola, Florida where she lived until 2002. She worked as a bookkeeper for Landrum Temporary Services and later the Better Business Bureau, also volunteering for the Pensacola Opera Company working in the office and altering costumes for cast members. Marjorie was also an awarded student with a focus in accounting at Pensacola Junior College. In 2002, she relocated to Jacksonville to work as a bookkeeper at her sister’s business, Stephens Advertising. She also volunteered for Friday Musicale working in the office and as the company treasurer and a Board member.

Marjorie had a sweet, kind, caring, and quiet spirit and an innate appreciation for music which led her to take piano lessons for many years, developing into a gifted player who could bring tears to the eyes of those listening to her. She also loved nature, gardening, bird watching, knitting, crocheting, and cooking.

Marjorie passed away peacefully in Jacksonville, Florida, on November 17, 2021 at age 74 in the presence of her children. She is preceded in death by her parents, Angeline and Willis Hicks, nephew David Alcove, and best friend Kathy Southern. She is survived by her son Stephen Oakes and daughter Lauren Oakes (Jim Velliky); grandson Noah Oakes and his mother Melissa Brown; longtime partner and caregiver Harry Gruber; Bill Oakes, former husband and the father of her children; sisters Jeannie Clark, Janet Neary, and Ann Rooks (Herb); and many other extended family members, friends, and neighbors.

Marjorie was deeply loved and will be greatly missed on this earth. Her family will be forever grateful for her dedicated and compassionate caregivers.
