

Martha Eleanor Carter, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 in Cape Coral, Florida. Born in Sarasota on May 10, 1929, she was the fourth child of Eva Parilee and Lewis Combs and was predeceased by her sister, Dorothy Hardisty and brothers, Lewis and Thornton Combs. Martha is survived by her husband, Donald Edison Carter of Cape Coral; son, Donald Edison Carter, Jr. of Virginia Beach and daughter, Deborah Moore (J. Richard Moore, Jr.); and grandson, James Richard Moore, III of Jacksonville.
Martha attended the Fassifern School for Girls in Hendersonville, NC, which established her lifelong love of the North Carolina mountains. Splitting time between Western North Carolina and Sarasota, Martha was active in the Sarasota community and named Miss Sarasota in 1947. After her marriage to Donald in 1957, the couple lived in Jacksonville and later moved to Ft. Myers, FL. Martha was a long-time member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, the First United Methodist Church and the Jasmine Garden Club. She loved her family, her beloved cat, Tiffany and anything that bloomed. Putting in many volunteer hours at the church thrift store, Martha will be remembered for her giving nature and willingness to help those in need.
A graveside service will be held at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. A reception for family and friends will be held immediately following the service at San Jose Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you remember your local hospice organization in recognition of the care provided by Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, Florida.
