Born on March 10, 1937, in Jacksonville, Florida, June spent her life deeply rooted in the city she loved. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1955. She later married the love of her life, Homer Nix, and together they built a family filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. June enjoyed a long and successful career in real estate, admired for her dedication to helping families find homes. After becoming a widow, she was blessed to share more than 20 wonderful years with her devoted companion, Mat Baines. His steadfast love, care, and presence enriched every aspect of her life, bringing comfort, joy, and purpose to her later years.
June was known for her warmth, generosity, and unwavering faith. She found joy in music, especially playing the piano, and was a devoted supporter of the Jacksonville Symphony, which she attended for many years. She also loved traveling to the mountains of North Carolina, where she found peace and renewal in nature. She was happiest when surrounded by those she loved. Her life was a testament to kindness, devotion, and quiet strength — qualities that will continue to inspire those who knew her.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Nix-Sanchez (Luis), her sister Nancy (Marshall) Howard, her beloved grandsons Alec Sanchez, Chandler Mays, and Austin Mays, and her long-time companion, Mat Baines, all of whom will carry forward her memory and values. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Nix, and her daughter, Melinda Mays-Smith, and joins them now in eternal rest.
A graveside service will be held for family and friends at Oaklawn Cemetery on Wednesday September 24, 2025 at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Salvation Army in her memory. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Angie Miller, June’s devoted caregiver during the last years of her life, as well as to Ponte Vedra Gardens Memory Care and the staff at Community Hospice for their compassionate care and support during her final days.
