Maxene L. Gillman born July 12, 1938 passed away Monday April 30, 2018 after a sudden illness surrounded by her husband of 28 years, Marvin Gillman, her three children, Robin, Melanie, and Henry, her stepson Ed Gillman, her son-in-law Ronnie Cooper, daughter-in-law Lisa Lewitt, and many dear friends.
Maxene was born in Newark, NJ at Beth Israel Hospital, attended the University of Florida, and has been a resident of Jacksonville since 1957. Maxene was married to Herbert Lewitt for 30 years until his death in 1988. Maxene and Marvin married in 1990 after being introduced by Nancy Mahon.
Maxene was an entrepreneur and a real estate visionary. She owned several businesses and was Relocation Director of Coldwell Banker and thereafter actively sold residential real estate throughout Jacksonville. Maxene participated in a weekly needlepoint group in Fernandina for many years, was a voracious reader, and enjoyed the Jacksonville Symphony and traveling the world with her husband.
Maxene was a life member of Hadassah and National Council of Jewish Women and a member of the Jacksonville Jewish Center for 61 years. Maxene was the Chairperson of the Construction Trades Qualifying Board for Duval County and a member of the Electrical Contractors Licensing Board of Florida appointed by Governor Martinez.
She is survived by her husband Judge Marvin Gillman, her three children Robin Cooper (Dr. Ronnie), Dr. Melanie Appell and Henry Lewitt (Lisa), 4 stepchildren Ed (Lori), Henry (Jacqueline), Dr. Carolyn, Andrew (Karla), grandchildren Dr. Lauren and Holly Appell, Brooke and Lindsey Gillman, Daniel, Michael, and Sarah Gillman. She is also survived by her brothers Walter and Andrew Levitin.
Funeral services will be held at the Jacksonville Jewish Center located at 3662 Crown Point Road Jacksonville, FL 32257 at 10:30 am on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 with interment to follow at Ponte Vedra Valley cemetery on Palm Valley Rd. Shiva will be observed at the Gillman residence on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday until 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Maxene Gillman may be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the Jacksonville Jewish Center.
