Michael William Hunter, 65, of Woodstock, GA, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, at Baptist Jacksonville Hospital. He was born on August 29, 1960 to parents Martha and J. Mike Hunter, and joined by two sisters, Melinda and Michelle. He attended Shamrock High School and received his degree from Clemson University (he would want us to add “Go Tigers!”). Michael married his college sweetheart, Nancy, and was a devoted father to Liane, David, and Kara. He began his career in highway contracting working for his father and grandfather. He continued working with intelligent traffic systems as the eventual President and CFO of M E Hunter & Associates, as a Group President at MasTec after the family company was acquired, and as the CEO at South Atlantic Traffic Corporation. A career highlight was ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in 2004 during his time at MasTec.
Mike was known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and friends. Of all of his accomplishments, he was most proud of his children. He instilled in them a strong work ethic, an unquenchable thirst for books, museums, music, and travel, and an innate curiosity about the world around us. He provided them with every opportunity to be well-traveled and well-educated, and taught them the names of the constellations over the years on a very special rooftop in Rabun County. Michael had a deep-rooted passion for Atlanta sports. He loved being on the water at the lake or ocean, learning about and discussing history and political science, and being with his family in the mountains. He lived a full life.
We take comfort in knowing that he is at peace among the stars that brought him so much joy. Michael will be remembered each time we pick up a book, see Clemson orange, hear the crash of waves on the beach, or board a plane to a new destination. Though we mourn his loss, we celebrate Michael’s life. We love you, we miss you, and we will continue to make you proud.
He is survived by daughter, Liane St. Clair and husband Ben; son, David Hunter and partner EJ; daughter, Kara Hunter; honorary son, Michael Mateu; sister, Michelle Gunnin and husband Bill; sister, Melinda Jenkins and husband Steve. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, J. Mike and Martha Hunter.
A private celebration of life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to No Longer Bound in Mike’s memory.
