Mildred Ann Wall Harrod, age 78, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 9, 2024. Mildred was born in Jacksonville, FL on July 6, 1945. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles M. Harrod, as well as her parents, Doris and Simeon (Buddy) Wall.
Mildred grew up in Jacksonville, FL and spent her childhood summers visiting family in Eclectic, Alabama. Mildred graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1963 and stayed friends with many of her classmates throughout the years. She worked for UF Heath (formerly Methodist Hospital) for 38 years before retiring in 2011.
Mildred, affectionately known as Meme, is survived by her daughter, Allison Harrod Akins (Todd), her beloved granddaughter, Brooke Mackenzie Akins, her 2 sisters, Connie Wall Jones (Frank) and Kim Wall Wood (Tracy), her sister-in-law, Glenda Harrod, and her best friend of over 40 years, Janie Egan, along with several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Mildred was such a wonderful lady and so loved by all. She was a very social person always making sure to keep up with her friends through daily phone calls to weekly lunches. She LOVED talking on the phone! Never once in all of the years that she had call waiting.....did she use it! You had to "wait in line" to talk to Meme. She was the kind of person that everyone trusted and she had a way of making people feel so comfortable in her presence. She adored her sweet Brookie and was so very proud of her academic accomplishments. She and Brooke talked almost daily and had a very special bond. She was also very close with her son-in-law, Todd, and he would often call on her for advice. She was such an outstanding southern cook and loved making meals for Allison and her family and bringing them over. She often expressed concern that Todd wasn't getting enough home cooked meals! She was an encyclopedia of knowledge and facts. She could remember people, places, events and dates going back 50+ years. She had a very quick wit and a great sense of humor. She was such a wonderful Mother, Meme, Mother-in-Law, Sister, Sister-in-Law, Aunt and Friend. They don't make them like her anymore. We will miss her more than we can even imagine and we will cherish each and every one of our memories as well as holidays spent together as a family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a charitable donation to Meals on Wheels - 849 Park St, Jacksonville, FL 32204, (904) 388-8187. We used to call her Meals on Wheels since she loved cooking and bringing over a dish.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024 (her 79th birthday) at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, FL 32223 with a Visitation at 11am, a Memorial Service at 12pm with Chaplain, Tracy Tucker, and a Luncheon in her honor immediately following.
