

Norma Thomas Suhrer, age 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 after an extended illness. Beloved wife and mother, Norma, was born to Sam and Marion Thomas on May 30, 1927. She grew up in Tucker Georgia and was the youngest of four children. In her youth she enjoyed all sports including basketball. It was the beginning of an active athletic life. In 1945 she met and married Julian G. Suhrer, Jr. a prominent Colon-Rectal Surgeon for many years in Jacksonville who predeceased her in 2008. Together they raised and educated six children. At the same time she enjoyed playing tennis that spanned into her 70’s as a member of Women’s A tennis teams at San Jose and Ponte Vedra Country Club. She pursued and was awarded a Bachelor’s degree in Art History from the University of North Florida and was a teacher for the Duval County Schools. She loved hiking in the Carolina mountains, and spending time with her 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren on the beaches of North Florida and lakes of Tennessee.
She is survived by 3 sons and 2 daughters; J.Stephen Suhrer, MD (Vicki), Karen Militana (Gary), Karla Liguori (Joe), Robert Suhrer, Scott Suhrer, MD (Carol); 12 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held on Monday January 15, 2018 at 11:00am at Hardage-Giddens Hendricks Chapel, 4115 Hendricks Avenue, followed by interment in Oaklawn Cemetery.
