

Owen King Wingate, 60, passed away on Dec.24,2014 in Jacksonville. He was born Jan 16, 1954 in Jacksonville to Vasco and Erma Wingate. He graduated in the first class of Ed White High and received a BA in Music Education from Newberry College in 1976, a Master of Church Music degree in 1980 from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY) and completed doctoral course work in Music Education at UF. Mr. Wingate served as music director in many churches including N.Dunedin Baptist, 1st Baptist Kississmee, Highlands Presbyterian and Grace Presbyterian in Gainesville. For the past 17 years, he was Professor of Music at Florida Gateway College in Lake City. He loved teaching and influenced many musicians during his career. A highlight of his career was taking his combined church and college choirs to participate in choral concerts at Carnegie Hall. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Judy Maige Wingate; daughters Lauren Owens (Blake) and Jennifer Wingate, both of Lexgingon, SC; 2 sisters, Kirby McCloud (Norman), and Kimberly Wingate Roberts, both of Jacksonville, and a brother, Fred Wingate (Cindy) of Birmingham, AL, brother in-law Ernest Grace and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Delores Grace. The family will receive friends Monday evening, from five o’clock until seven o’clock at Oaklawn Chapel. Services will be held at Lakewood Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, December 30 at eleven o’clock in the morning with his friend, Rev.Cliff Lyda officiating. Interment will follow at Jacksonville Memory Gardens in Orange Park.
