Pauline W. Smith was born on February 20, 1928, in Jacksonville, Florida. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Paul Smith, with whom she shared 30 years of marriage until his passing in 1984; her son, Scott R. Smith of Sanford, Florida, who passed in 2005; and many dear family members and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Leslie E. Smith of Atlantic Beach, Florida, as well as a large and loving extended family.
Pauline’s second great love was her home along the scenic Strawberry Creek in the Tidewater neighborhood, where she lived for 60 years. She found joy in fishing, boating, and connecting with nature, especially in caring for the raccoons she affectionately considered her pets. During her years in Tidewater, she built many deep and lasting friendships. She generously gave her time as a volunteer at Baptist Hospital and took pride in helping others by teaching reading. She also cherished her bridge group, creating many fond memories, and was an active member of the Red Hat Society, where she formed new friendships, traveled, and participated in numerous events.
Throughout her career, Pauline held a variety of roles, but her proudest achievement was her work with the Southside Business Men’s Club, where she served as Executive Secretary. She broke barriers as the organization’s first female member, first female lifetime honorary member, and first woman elected to the Board of Governors, serving a three-year term. After 41 years of dedicated service, she retired in 2000. In recognition of her contributions, the Southside Business Men’s Club established the Pauline W. Smith Scholarship Fund, which continues to support local college students each year.
A small graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pauline W. Smith Scholarship Fund.
