Phyllis was a very special person.  She will always have a very special place in my heart. We met during difficult times for both of us, yet Phyllis always maintained her inner strength, her kindness, generosity, and love for those close to her. Her beauty, her smile, and her alluring eyes, will live forever in my memory. I humbly thank her family for accepting me into their world, I am thankful to have been a small part of her rich life. 

The studio was my safe place, and Ma Picus was one of my greatest influences.  Her way of living for the moment, packing everything in, reacting to challenges, enjoying everyone around her, and finding the funny side to any situation still inspires me to be more *alive*, because Ma Picus got more out of one day than many people get from a lifetime.
She hosted "after parties" at her home after recitals when I was little.  I always felt so special being included. I don't remember much... and probably fell asleep pretty early... but that she let an everyday little girl like me be there, meant the world to someone who's never been very good at fitting in.
I got to stay with her once in a while, just us, and I remember her teaching me how to clean windows with vinegar and newspapers...it didn't occur to me I was doing chores because, to my mind, Ma Picus was too glamorous for chores... I still use vinegar to get a good sparkle and know it's possible to be glamorous AND practical and capable.  
Her car, and HUGE purse, and records, and little drum, and crackers, and yard sticks, and perfect hair & make-up...all the little Ma Picus things that, when I see them anywhere else, she's there too.
I thought the home she raised her family in was the fanciest, most stylish place.  It was built into a hill, had big windows over a tree-backed backyard, vaulted ceilings, a balcony, and a down-the-hill driveway... SO fancy and different from other houses.   I wanted a house just like it, but how likely is that?  My home is built into a hill, has windows over a tree-backed backyard, vaulted ceilings, a balcony, and a ridiculously difficult down-the-hill garage - and it felt like home the minute I walked in... I even have a dance floor downstairs.  Mine is the cottage version of her manor house lol, but she'd have gotten a kick out of it :)
She loved EVERY person who walked through that pocket-door, and shared her joyful spirit with everyone she met.  We were SO lucky to have had her. 

Stan, Art, Leisa & Family,  Growing up your Mom was like a second Mom to me and Countless other kids who were friends with Mark. In adulthood, Phyllis was one of my best friends and my biggest Prayer Warrior. Every time I visited or spoke with her she always told me that she Prayed for me not once but twice a day. I Loved her dearly & will surely miss her. May God give you all His Peace, Comfort & Love.  R.I.P. Ms. P.

Phyllis was my dance teacher for Six years in the 1960’s.   She was a wonderful teacher and a beautiful person inside and out.  I have fond memories of my dance classes and still remember many of the routines she taught us.  

My prayers are with her family at this time.  I know she is dancing in Heaven with the Angels!

Wow, Mrs Picus lived a long life! I sure enjoyed dancing for her in the late 70’s starting on Emerson and into the then new studio on Spring  Park! She worked us hard and taught us well, if you yawned she said you have poor breathing habit, so many stories. I danced in the nutcracker one year, so many fun memories, love dancing! My condolences to all the family! 

So many of my best memories include this incredible woman. From the tap of that measuring stick to the smell of her car and the way she rubbed her lips together. I can hear her laughter and her “What was that?” .  Her beauty was enchanting. She was giving and loving and I’m so very lucky to have had her in my life. I would not be the woman I am today without her. She has passed on the best of her within all of us. She is truly missed. 

Deepest condolences and prayers to the family.  Mrs. Picus was beautiful, graceful, kind and such a pleasure to be around. When I had the opportunity to meet her,  she made me and my family feel wanted and welcomed. It was an honor and privilege to have met her.  


Mrs Picus was such a wonderful lady !! She taught me to dance from middle school to my twenties.  I would bring my oldest son to dance class in his playpen  and we loved every minute of it !!! She taught me Pointe and how to b a graceful dancer.  I remember she would always talk about Shelby and Travis and how proud she was of them... I will always cherish the times at her house to catch me up on dance or just to talk.  I love u and will see u someday again ❤️ Leisa and family I know she loves u so much ❤️

So sorry for your loss our deepest sympathy to your family.

Ma Picus touched 1,000s of lives.  For those of us who’s lives she touched, she holds a special place in our hearts.  I was one of her students as were my daughter and son.  Memories for me started at age 5 at the Emerson Street studio.  Hearing “one more time” over and over again as we practiced a dance or that she needed to get her “brick bat.”  Later,  listening to her tell my children “eh, eh, eh,” which they knew  meant they better stop whatever they were doing.   I miss hearing the ruler tap on the floor and her beating the drum to keep time.   Remember our laughter as she attempted to tell a joke – thank goodness Mr. Picus and Mark had that covered, because she could slaughter a punch line.   She was a real-life Lucille Ball, with cheese crackers and telling airline personnel that she had fudged about her weight as she boarded a small “seater” plane.   So many great memories.

Took dance from Aunt Phyllis in the early days for 8 years in a in closed carport on Cala Dr. Will be missed & Loved her. Bounced me on her knee, I was about 1 while listening to her future husband on the radio
