Jacksonville Florida. Phyllis was born on February 5, 1928 (92 years old) in Bayard Florida
and grew up in Jacksonville Florida. She was the youngest of 5 siblings of John and Hattie
Ortagus.
Phyllis was very active in the performing arts community in Jacksonville her whole life. She
owned a dance studio and taught dance for more than 70 years in Jacksonville. Early in her
career she traveled the world dancing and singing with many famous performers and was
even in the Water Follies. Through her teaching career she educated thousands of children
and even taught her daughter Leisa to take over the family business and the studio
continues today.
Phyllis was the true example of the saying “variety is the spice of life”. She lived her life by
making her days fun and exciting. Her style and grace were contagious. From performing
dance engagements to doing Elizabeth Taylor look alike performances. There was never a
dull moment with Phyllis.
Phyllis is survived by 3 children, Stan Picus & wife Mila, Arthur Picus & wife Denise, Leisa
