

Shirley Burney Dixon, 88, of Jacksonville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on February 17, 2010 after an extended illness. Born in Baltimore, MD on November 3, 1921 to Robert Allen & Myrtle Margaret Miller Huster, she moved to Jacksonville in her teens.
Preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Elzie “Dick” Dixon, brother Robert Huster, sister Lillian Symbouras, step-son & daughter-in-law Wendell & Elaine Dixon, Shirley is survived by her sons, H. Vann Burney (Ernestine), Bill Burney (Dot); daughters, Linda Lining (John), Susan Landregan & Karen Western (Chris); sister, Myrtle Woodward; 13 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews & friends.
She was retired from the Children’s Home Society after 30 years of service. A devoted member of Southside Baptist Church, she was very active in the Prayer Chapel Ministry. She also volunteered with the Women’s Auxiliary at Baptist Medical Center Downtown.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Southside Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Webber, Dr. Mark Wilbanks, Dr. Eddie Lockamy & Rev. Charles Ragland officiating. Burial in Oaklawn Cemetery will follow. Family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue.
