Dr. Stephen Courtney Hite, 95, passed away after a brief illness surrounded by his family on December 5, 2025. He was born and raised in Petersburg, VA, enjoying summers on two nearby family farms. After graduating from Petersburg High School, he attended the University of Richmond, and after three years, transferred to the University of Georgia where he received his DVM degree. He graduated with honors, and then served in the Army Veterinary Corps from 1954–1956. During that time, he met his future wife, Betty, on a blind date. They were married in 1956 and moved to Jacksonville, FL, where Dr. Hite opened the Blanding Blvd. Animal Hospital. He conscientiously practiced veterinary medicine for 50 years.
Dr. Hite was dedicated to hard work at the hospital and was involved in many local, state, and national veterinary associations. He nurtured a love of nature and gardening, and was an active member of the Men’s Garden Club. He also thoroughly enjoyed sports, especially football and basketball, as well as golfing with his friends.
However, the true love of his life was his beloved wife of 61 years. They traveled the world together, but found much happiness together in their yard and garden.
He is survived by his children, Susan (Quinton), Carolyn (Richard), and Stephen (Hilda) as well as four grandchildren and five great grandchildren, with two more on the way. Dad/Grandaddy/Greatgrandaddy cherished time getting together with all of his family, especially for family meals. He will be dearly remembered by all of us.
A Memorial Service to honor his life will be held in the chapel of Riverside Park United Methodist Church 819 Park St. Jacksonville, FL., on Saturday, December 20, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jacksonville Humane Society in his memory. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin, www.hgmandarin.com, 904-288-0025.
