

Mrs. Thelma Catherine Humphreys Holmes also known as “Miss Captain” age 94 went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 12, 2012. Thelma was a Jacksonville native who was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence Holmes in 2009.
Thelma answered the Lord’s call to service and joined the Salvation Army where she was commissioned in 1938. She served in Florida and South Carolina before meeting her husband of 43 years in the Holy Land. Together they served in appointments all over the country, from Key West to Anchorage. Thelma and her husband traveled the world with the message of Salvation. Thelma wrote of these experiences and other experiences, while serving in the Salvation Army in her book, MISS CAPTAIN. Thelma retired as a Major in 1997 after 60 years of service.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her only child Melody Holmes of Denison Texas, extended family, many officers, soldiers, and volunteers of the Salvation Army and countless lives touched by her ministry.
Visitation with the family will be Tuesday September 18, 2012 at noon followed by her Funeral Service at 1:00 P.M. Services will be at the Salvation Army Citadel Corps located at 15 East Church Street Jacksonville, Florida. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Evergreen Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to The Salvation Army World Services Organization.
