Lorene and Family, In reading the kind words from all Tom's friends and family I had to think no one has known you two as long as I have. I think back to Glen Baptist where we all got together. I get a little teary when I realize all that is gone. Gone but not forgotten. Virgil Harvey told me Tom had passed when I asked him at our high school reunion if he knew where you were.  I extend my deepest condolences to you all. I lost Dave on Easter Sunday 2007. Lorene please call me when you have time and let's get together for a little reminiscing.  All of our old group that we
hung with at church back then is gone. My number is 278-1093. I still live in Orange Park.

It is with heavy hearts that we write this as Tom, Lorene & their family are also our family & we love them all dearly! The highlight of my life growing up in Barbourville, Kentucky was when The Perkins Family came to visit during the summers! Tom & Lorene were my parents', Gillas & Lorene Barnett, best friends! When Terry & I got married The Perkins Family became special to Terry too! Tom taught us so very much about life...how to live, how to love, how to always have Faith in God & how to persevere! We know that Tom is with God & God's Angels watching over all of us from Heaven & he will be forever missed but he will always remain in our hearts! Dear Perkins Family,
It is with a sad heart that I discovered the passing of Mr. Perkins. He was one of a kind Science teacher. He unlocked the door of anatomy and biological sciences for me. I credit him with my chosen career path in the Army Nurse Corps as the Chief of Surgical Services & Anesthesia. I learned medulla oblongata in the 7th grade at Oceanway in 1972. It was the beginning of a long career. 

I also remember Mr. Perkins for spending his summers at San Mateo Elementary. He guided us kids into crafts and sports. He kept us busy and out of trouble. He was a kind, Christian man.

My father, Kenneth U. Campbell was also a teacher and friend with Mr. Perkins, wife, Lorene and sons. Oceanway and the city of Jax lost two of its greatest teachers ever!

My prayers are with you all and thank you for sharing your dear Husband and Father with us.

I am James willie's Grandaughter judith ,Anna Ruth Perkins was my mother  so so sorry for your loss so close together in our family it saddens me deeply that so many of us live in jacksonville and never visit one another. I lost my father at the age of 5 my heart never got over it . Love you guys with all my heart .

Pay attentio now! It is 1958, you are   sitting in the class of Mr. Perkins. To Mr. Perkins Science is a combo of physics, biology, chemistry {ph and septic care}, astronomy [moon phases, tides, when to sow-when to reap and when to cut your hair] and gravity, environment {his beloved streams in the Tennessee mountains}, health, history, agriculture, biology, electricity, genetics and physics. A very relaxed, friendly and warm place to think and learn. As Dean of Boys, He is our big brother. He will occasionally chuckle and His Cherokee eyes will dance for just a second. He is fair,honest, pleasant,caring, kind, warm, tender, and His mind is far deeper than you can grasp. He is One of God's Special Angel's on earth. In Physics he will teach you more than just that an  empty onoutgoing ship will ride higher in the water on outgoing tide [for several reasons, but especially always except January and July}. Outgoing flow collides with existing water masses outside the inlet, lifting the ship. Our northerly drift diminishes in July and Jan. His most everlasting Physics lesson was 'when you extend a horizontal straight line to it's extremities-east and west meet/left and right become one'. As an humble genius, I took this to be His spiritual lesson rather than physical or political. The harder the battle, the sweeter the victory. We Love You! You pitched a great game for the teachers at our end of the year game in '59.

I'll miss you Pepa, but I take comfort in knowing we will fish together again in heaven. Until then you won't have to worry about me tangling my lure in your line 100 times! Thank you for being my Pepa.. I love you.

It brings tears to my eyes to read the condolences and see just how many lives "my" Uncle Tom touched in his lifetime.  When I was growing up we couldn't wait for Uncle Tom and Aunt Lorene to come visit....they were so much fun and they loved us kids so much. Uncle Tom would keep us up half the night telling stories and we will never forget our memories of him.  I know he is in heaven with dad now (John) and we will see them again. Just wanted to let Mr. Perkins family know what a wonderful teacher he was. I don't remember any of the kids that I went to school with not loving him and his class. He always was there for us. That was during the 60's later I got to see him when he was at Lanier Nursing Home. He was still just as sweet as I remembered him from school. God Bless you and we will keep you in our prayers!!

As Oceanway Junior High students in the early sixties, my husband and I both had Mr. Perkins for science?   We have only fond memories of the classes that we had with him!   So sorry to learn of his passing and equally as happy to learn that he had a wonderful life.

My Thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of your loss.  Mr Perkins was my teacher at Oceanway in 63-64 and the later taught my son.  He was one of those teachers who made a lasting impression. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

I am so sad to hear of Tom passing. he was a wonderful person and loved children so much. mr Perkins was not only a great teacher, he was a christian example to all who knew him.  He was also a wonderful dad and husband.
