She was a wonderful support for me while I went through struggles back in the 80's.  Miss you, Virginia Beverly.  Saw the donation saint at Mary Virginia Terry Cancer Center today, glad you are there in spirit, always giving support.

Dear Beverly Family - Your mom and dad were one heck of a "power couple" back in the days before such a term existed.  Each had a great influence on me as a new arrival to Jacksonville back in 1983:  Phil introduced me to the arcane practice of railroad law as a newcomer to ICC proceedings.  Virginia gave me hope, through her career and personal examples, that women could achieve in the legal profession despite the then conservative attitudes of many members of the Bar.  They both instilled the importance of making a contribution to our community by sharing time and talent.
And then there was more than one fish fry over which they presided - and don't forget the hushpuppies!

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I remember when Joan Monsky and I had Theatreworks, your Mom was always the first person to show up at our office to buy tickets for the Sunday  Series for the grandchildren. She was a wonderful person and I am grateful that I knew her.

Judge Beverly was the epitome of the term Jurist and as importantly, reflected the charm and demeanor of that endangered species, the Southern Gentlewoman. 

I first met Judge Beverly when she rotated to the Circuit Criminal bench in the late 70’s. On one occasion she was invited by my Sergeant Jim Pfeiffer to accompany our Narcotics Squad to a rock concert at the coliseum. Warned to dress down so that she might blend in with her somewhat scurrilous appearing escorts, Judge Beverly appeared not only dressed for the Garden Club but accompanied by her tall, over 6’5”, distinguished, crew cut husband Phil Beverly – who was in jeans as I recall! At one point as we edged out into the standing room only crowd, the air full of the smell of burning marijuana, a group to our left was passing around a marijuana cigarette. Reflective of the times and atmosphere, the marijuana made its journey to a young lady next to Judge Beverly who in turn, offered it to the Judge. She, of course, quietly demurred with her best Southern courtesy. Later she expressed her amazement at the openness of the drug use and raucousness of the crowd of young people. She served on the Criminal bench as well as all the other Divisions with excellence; however she never forgot her “field trip” and window into that culture. She always made herself available to her “tour guides” and other law enforcement in reviewing and signing search and arrest warrants, as well as handling several complicated long term drug trials.

When the woman who became my wonderful wife accepted my marriage proposal, Judge Beverly was among the first that we visited and shared the scoop. When Linda was later elected to the judiciary,  Judge Beverly mentored her and remained a role model. At that time I had to admit that my wife was not the first judge with whom I was enamored – that role would always belong to the woman who defined the roles of Judge, Gentlewoman, Wife, Mother, Community Servant, whose faith and love of family was always evident.

Linda and I count with pleasure the time we got to spend with Judge Beverly. Our prayers are with her family as they prepare to commend her to God’s tender care and promise.

Mrs. Beverly was a great friend to my Father and Mother and I thank her very much for being so.

I worked for Judge Beverly the last few years before her retirement and have always loved and valued the time I spent with her.  I was so saddened to hear of her death, but had no idea that she was so ill.  May God bless all of you during this very difficult time.
