

Virginia A. Shields, 85, passed away August 23, 2017 at Community Hospice & Palliative Care Anne and Donald McGraw Center for Caring, Jacksonville, FL following an extended illness. Mrs. Shields earned her BA from Marshall University in Sociology. She served on the Vestry, as an Altar Guild member, and Sunday School teacher at Trinity Episcopal Church in Huntington, WV where she also worked as Director of Christian Education. She demonstrated God’s love and care for others through her own faith. She was also active in the Ladies Auxiliary at C&O Hospital in Huntington. She was an active member of Buford Chapter DAR, Huntington, and Fort San Nicholas Chapter DAR, Jacksonville and was a true patriot. She also served on the Altar Guild of San Jose Episcopal Church, Jacksonville where she has been a member. Mrs. Shields was preceded in death by her father, Francis Normer Andrews, MD, her mother, Annie Frances Arters; her husband of 57 years, Douglas R. Shields; her son, Douglas R. Shields, Jr.; and her brother, John E. Corbitt, III. She is survived by her sister, Ann Hines, of Greensboro, NC; her sons, Robert L. Shields, Sr. (Susan) of Huntington, WV, and Lewis G. Shields of Powder Springs, GA; and her grandchildren, Robert L. Shields, Jr. (Hilary), Gibsonia, PA, Sarah A. Shields, Marietta, GA, and Samuel A. Shields, Richmond, VA; and many nieces and nephews, especially Rev. Charles Bailey (Sharon) of Jacksonville, FL. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 5:00pm on Sunday, August 27, 2017 in Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home of Mandarin. The Funeral Service will be held at 10:00am on Monday, August 28, 2017 in San Jose Episcopal Church, 7423 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32217 with the Rev. Gerald Alexander as officiant. Interment will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in Maple Park Cemetery, Bluefield, WV with the Rev. Chad Slater as officiant.
