Mr. Maness would always help my great grandfather as well as the rest of my family the best that he could. I remember seeing him a lot when I was just a little girl. I'm 19 now. He'll always be in my heart.

My condolences to the entire Maness family.  I will always remember Mr. Maness as a man of integrity and I am forever grateful for all he did for me and my mother, Rosezenia Lewis.  He was always like a father to me.

Just came apon this. My friend, my mentor has passed. What an incredible man Bill Maness was - serving God, his community, family and strays like me. A man who in the 60's, changed the world. My heart goes out to his entire family and many friends and followers. He was the best of the best. I loved him.

Judge Maness was one of the few people who have known me all my life from my childhood visits to the Florida Theater Building with its elevator “gates” to his being a chaperone at the Senior Party night party after graduation from Lee High School when we went by bus to the Botts' place on Doctor's Lake Drive.  Remember, Holt?   
 Judge Maness was the attorney when I, at age three, was adopted by my stepfather and Judge Layton was the Judge.  That law firm unfortunately is a time gone by when firms were stable and considered all working with them as  family with the Raglands,  Kurtzs,  Laytons and Judge Maness always there, a part of this “office” family.   Judge Maness shaped my adult ethics and politics; made me think of the world beyond the safe environs of Avondale, and to actually consider the greater implications of decisions which affected my intellectual advancement and in every way shaped me into who I am today.
It was my greatest fortune, through my family, to have had him as part of my life and I am will be ever grateful for his influence and wisdom.

Mr. Manness meant so much to me as an attorney, friend, and mentor.  My father, Bill Allen, and Mr. Manness had been great adversaries in the courts and dear friends in their personal lives.  When I had need of an attorney my  father said I needed the best and he took me to meet with Mr. Manness.  I benefitted from his counsel as my attorney and supporter, as I went to law school.  He was as proud as my father on my graduation day.  The world is a better place for Mr. Manness having been here.  He has left a legacy of lives made better because of his passion and love. I first met the Judge and Holt at Camp Immokalee over 50 years ago, years later when I came back to Jacksonville, we spent a good bit of time together through the Church and through mutual interests in civil rights though I have not seen much lately, He was much cared for by my late wife, Sarah. He lived what he believed and that is not always the case for many of us. He was such an admirable person.

Our families go way back to the days of the law firm, Ragland, Kurz, Layton and Maness....lots of wonderful memories both in town and at Ocean House. Bill was one of my mentors....

Bill seemed to believe it was his personal responsibility to address every injustice and help everyone in need. He also had the rare wisdom to recognize that sometimes it is in people's best interest not to give them what they think they need at the moment, but to encourage life changes that will contribute to their long term happiness.

My payers go out to the family.For the past 14 years I have worked at fire station #51 on Old St.Augustine Rd.I have enjoyed when Mr.Maness would stop by for a blood pressure or some water during his walkes and thinking I hope I can do that when I'm his age,he will be missed.What an extraodinairy and accomplished man

When we moved into the neighbor there weren't many days we didn't see "The Judge" walking.  When our children were little he must have heard me calling them in for dinner.  A few days later on one of his walks he stopped at my house and gave me a bell.  He told me his mother used it to call the children in and he wanted me to have one too. My children are grown and out of the house, but the bell is still on my back porch! May special memories comfort you during this time. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.

I have missed Bill from riding the bus and now I will miss him in my life.  He was truly a person of substance and his optimistic outlook on life was very contagious.
