

Mr. William Marcy Mason, Jr died peacefully at his home February 10, 2012. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Flo Hope Lipscomb Mason, and his parents, Varina Knight Mason and William Marcy Mason, Sr. and his brother Johnny Mason. He is survived by his brother, Raymond Knight Mason. Mr. Mason was born in Jacksonville in 1924. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1942. He attended the University of Florida where he was a member of the SAE Fraternity. He left college during the war where he was an engineering officer on troop and cargo ships in the North and South Atlantic, Indian Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Persian Gulf. After the war, he returned to the University of Florida and received a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1947. Then he went to work in the family Mason Lumber Company. After his father’s death in 1952, he became president of the expanded Liberty Mortgage Business. On December 28, 1949 he married Flo Hope Lipscomb. During his business career, he was president of the W.M. Mason & Co. and long time president of the Jacksonville Federal Savings Bank. He retired in 1991.
He was a member of the Downtown Rotary, Florida Yacht Club, Timuquana Country Club, Ponte Vedra Club, Biltmore Forest Country Club, and the Farmington Country Club. He was past president of the River Club, past captain and king of Ye Mystic Revellers, past director of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, past director of Florida League and Savings Bank, Trustee Emeritus of Jacksonville University and past president of the Board of Trustees of Bartram School.
He and Mrs. Mason had four children: William M. Mason, III, Flo Hope Mason, J. Demere Mason (Teresa), and Scarlett M. Nestler (Peter). He has twelve grand children and 9 great- grandchildren.
We will give thanks and celebrate the life of Bill at a Memorial Service at St. John’s Cathedral at 11 A.M., Thursday, February 16, 2012. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John’s Cathedral. 256 East Church Street. Jacksonville, Florida 32202.
