William “Bill” Nickerson of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at the age of 94. He is predeceased by his lovely wife of 74 years, Marge, whom he lovingly cared for during her long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. They are now together for eternity. He is survived by two sons William (Debbie) Nickerson and James (Hugh) Nickerson.
Bill and Marge were high school sweethearts and married after his return from serving in the U.S. Navy. Soon after they moved to California where he attended UCLA and graduated with a degree in engineering.
Bill in "The Tradition of Making the Best Cans", started his career in 1955 with The Carnation Company. In 1960, American Cans was pleased to have him join their group. He worked there for eight years, until W.H. Hutchinson needed his expertise. GENERAL FOODS recognized Bill's talent for expertly processing bare metal into beautiful blue and orange cans and that's all it took. They knew when he began in 1972 that he would always be "GOOD TO THE LAST CAN". In 1988, Bill invented the ornamental design of the Maxwell House coffee can....he will always be known as "The Can Man".
