She left behind hundreds of amazing paintings, which we will pass along as parting favors at the funeral. Winnie was world-renowned for her lack of patience, not withholding her opinion and a knack for telling it like it is.
She always told you the truth, even when it was, well, not the truth. She told inappropriate jokes to anyone who would listen, with an innocent smile on her face. She was 26 years old until she hit about 90, when she became “elderly” to anyone who asked... as well as to those who didn’t. She hated getting wet, yet she was a lifeguard, taught swimming lessons and boated up and down the east coast from Florida to Massachusetts.
Winnie was a loving mother and grandmother, was generous of spirit, brought smiles to everyone’s faces and loved her family fiercely. She was born in 1923 in Brockton, Massachusetts, to parents Sophie Cohen and Abe Maron. She worked in her father’s upholstery business, completed business college, joined the Women’s Army Corp. and served proudly in the United States Military during World War II.
After marrying Dr. Theodore Weisman (for 25 years) and having two children, she returned to work and helped her husband to create a thriving optometric practice in Watertown, Massachusetts. She had the pleasure of working with her oldest son, Barry, when he joined the practice as well. She moved to Cape Cod after the death of her husband and started buying and fixing up properties. This led her to go into business with her two sons. Together they founded Theo Realty Associates, a Boston area real estate investment company. She later became president of Maron Management company of Boston, which specialized in the procurement, management and renovation of apartment buildings. She was a proud owner, with her family, of many properties in Jacksonville, Florida, most notably those that housed Maron’s Furniture stores, a business her parents started in 1951.
She had the great fortune of meeting Morris Libby when she moved to Florida and had the opportunity to spend another 25 years married to him. They traveled and boated extensively and loved to share their experiences with others. In later years, she taught painting classes at the Berkman Plaza, and continued classes at River Garden and the Coves.
Winnie is survived by her son Barry Weisman (Karen), daughter-in-law Susanne Weisman, grandchildren Tedd Russell Weisman (Alecia), Shari Quermback (Michael), Theodore Weisman (Inhae), Alison Weisman (Rebekah), and Brett Weisman, and great-grandson Beckett Quermback. She is also survived by one sister Ruth Fraden (Abe), as well as her beloved nieces and nephews, stepchildren Debbie Weitz (Brad) and Robert Libby, and step-grandchildren Travis Weitz and Taylor Weitz.
She was preceded in death by two loving husbands (Dr. Theodore Weisman and Morris Libby), two brothers (Bernard Maron and Leon Maron), and her son (David Weisman).
Funeral services will be held Thursday, 3/5/2020 at 1:30 in New Center Memorial Park (New Center Cemetery 200 E 43rd St, Jacksonville, FL 32208). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to River Garden, 11401 Old St. Augustine Road, Jacksonville, FL 32258.
