The family will welcome friends for a visitation on Monday, July 29, at 1:00 p.m., with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Jasper’s First Baptist Church. A graveside service will take place afterward at Oakhill Cemetery. Dr. Mike Adams, Dr. Ken Cheek, and Reverend Andy Frazier will officiate the service.
She is survived by her son, Pratt Sherer (Teresa); granddaughters Laura Sherer and Sara Sherer Patton (D.J.); arriving soon, great-grandson Jackson Patton; nieces Mary Duke and Jamie Morris; and special friends, the Montes family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clement Sherer; her parents, Huey Smith and Madge Bradford Smith; and sister, Martha Smith Lawrence.
Hulene graduated from Walker County High School in 1945 and married her high school sweetheart in 1946. They welcomed their son, Pratt, in 1951, and together, they established Sherer Sales Company, where Hulene expertly managed the finances for over 40 years.
A devoted member of Jasper’s First Baptist Church for more than 80 years, Hulene made a lasting impact through her role as a Sunday School teacher, nurturing and guiding 6th-grade girls. Her dedication went beyond the classroom, as she created memorable experiences for them with trips to Six Flags, Panama City Beach, and more, demonstrating both biblical teachings and the Christian way of life.
Hulene was passionate about bridge, dedicating a special day each week to the game and actively participating in several local bridge clubs. She also cherished traveling with her husband and indulged in her love for sewing, painting, and decorating. One of her cherished accomplishments was decorating the windows of the Jasper Public Library. Her enthusiasm for decorating extended to her involvement in the local Garden Club, reflecting her vibrant spirit and creativity.
Above all, Hulene’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother to Pratt, mother-in-law to Teresa, and Nana to Laura, Sara, and D.J. She shared cherished family traditions with her old recipes, taught the art of handwritten notes, and instilled a deep commitment to faithful service in the church. Her family always felt her boundless love and knew they were consistently upheld in her prayers.
Pallbearers will be Dan Evans, Bert Hendrix, Dr. Sam Hollingsworth, James Kitchens, Gary Rowland, and Jim Wilson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Claude Osula, Tommy Sherer, Bob Sherer and Frank Watts.
The family requests that donations be made in lieu of flowers to Jasper’s First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 71, Jasper, AL 35502, or to Walker Area Community Foundation, P. O. Box 171, Jasper, AL 35502.
