James was preceded in death by his parents, William Thomas and Velmer Arlene Barham; his brothers, Charles Barham, Roy Barham, Roger Barham, and Bill Barham; his sister, Virginia Parnell; and his uncle, Bob Barham.
Born in Morris Chapel, Tennessee, James was raised by his Uncle Bob in a loving, hardworking home. He graduated from Morris Chapel High School and studied at Union University. He spent his career in food service with Morrison's, overseeing food programs for college campuses, hospitals, and senior care centers. His work with the Alabama Council on Aging's Meals on Wheels program exemplified his commitment to serving others. Known for his integrity and kindness, James treated his employees like family, constantly extending grace, respect, and compassion.
James's legacy is firmly rooted in his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. He lived a life of grace, humility, service, and a deep love for his family, friends, and church community. Throughout his life, James was a faithful and active church member. From serving as deacon at Scooba Baptist, Chair of the Deacons at First Baptist Alabaster, to becoming a dedicated member of First Baptist Jasper in retirement, James never wavered in his calling to serve. Whether through Deacon Ministry, mission trips, Carpenters for Christ, Disaster Relief, Youth Prayer Breakfasts, or Adults on Missions, James served wholeheartedly, always pointing others to Christ.
Outside of ministry and work, James found joy in God's creation. He was an avid hunter who cherished the time it allowed him to spend with his son, family, and friends. He also coached Upward Basketball and was a steadfast encourager to all those around him. James led with his heart. His life testified to his deep love for Jesus and his desire to make that love known to others. In his final year, the prayers and presence of family and friends were a profound comfort to him. He never missed a moment to remind those around him of the love of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the mission programs at First Baptist Church of Jasper, 1604 4th Avenue, Jasper, AL 35501, continuing James's legacy of faith and service.
