He is survived by son, Marlin Shubert (Susan); daughters Vera Jo "Joie" Sasnett (Phil); Kay Robinson (Mike); Martha Butts (Jeff); Carol Byars (Tom); grandchildren, Cristy Moody (Lincoln), Casey Salors (Matt); Josh Robinson (Paula); Kim DeShazo (John); Karla Granger (Lance); Amy Sanders (Jake); Kyle Cooper (Rebekah); Jennifer Davis (James); Andy Byars (Samantha); Joel Sasnett (Caroline); Kaley Gurley (Gabe); Allison Butts; Geoffrey Butts (Kimi); 20 great grandchildren with two on the way; sister, Reba Morrow (Ray); brothers, Johnnie Shubert (Jeanette), Donald Shubert (Judy), Reynold Shubert; special friends Bobbie and Ed Richardson; and caregivers, Emma Bobo, Angela Lacey, Cassie Jackson, Terry Jinright, Cynthia Thursby, Janie Laskoski and a host of other family and friends. God gave Joe Shubert a special voice and he used it to God’s Glory. His deep bass was recognizable from church pews to nursing homes where he was a member of the beloved Sonshine Singers. He learned to sing by shape notes and had a deep love for Gospel music. He taught his children to love it as well, which inspired decades of singing by The Shubert Family in churches across the state. In his early life, Shubert worked hard to provide for his wife and five children. After retirement, he settled into a life of fishing on the Alabama River and watching Atlanta Braves baseball. He loved it when members of his family walked through his door, especially when it involved all 30+ members being together. Many blessings were sung instead of spoken to the tune of “Sweet, Sweet Spirit” or “Amazing Grace”. Shubert recently stood in front of his church explaining that his testimony could be told best through the words of the song, “I’m a Child of the King”: Oh, yes, oh yes, I'm a child of the King His royal blood now flows in my veins. And I who was wretched and poor now can sing Praise God, praise God, I'm a child of the King. Together, the legacy of Christine and Joe Shubert will live on through the family they taught to serve the Lord and to sing for joy, not because we have to, but because of His great love for us. Pallbearers will be Josh Robinson, Kyle Cooper, Andy Byars, Joel Sasnett, Dawson Salors, Lincoln Moody, Matt Salors, John DeShazo, Lance Granger, Jake Sanders, James Davis and Gabe Gurley. Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Sonshine Singers. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Old Zion United Methodist Church, 305 Old Zion Loop, Nauvoo, AL 35578.
