Nelda Bailey Hendon, formerly of Jasper, passed away on April 25, 2024. Her husband of 73 years, Everett Vaughn Hendon preceded her in death on February 9, 2024. She was also preceded in death by parents Eunice and Tom Bailey and sister Emily Hudson. She is survived by daughters Pat Musselwhite (David) and Jan Goodwin (Mark); grandchildren Jana Musselwhite, Scott Musselwhite (Emilee), Dan Goodwin (Rachel), and great grandchild Sydnee Musselwhite; a brother, Gerald Bailey and sister, Betty Law and much-loved niece, Lisa Law.
Known as a quiet woman of service, Nelda’s greatest joy was taking care of her family. She was a beautiful example of a Proverbs 31 woman. She and Vaughn were devoted to each other, and their marriage was an inspiration to everyone. Nelda loved to cook and was known for her delicious meals and fabulous cakes. Those attending family reunions and church potlucks always sought out her dishes, and she rarely went home with leftovers. One of her sons in law said it was her cooking that sealed the deal on his decision to marry her daughter! She was a skilled seamstress, making beautiful clothes for her daughters and granddaughter. Above all, she was a woman who loved and was loved deeply.
Nelda was currently a member of Eastside Baptist Church. Throughout her life she was active in church and served in Woman’s Missionary Union and volunteered as a church hostess and in the library. During a Lay Renewal at her church, she was chosen as the “best Christian in the church,” beating out the ministerial staff and the deacons! Nelda was also a member of the Gideons International Women’s Auxiliary.
Nelda requested a graveside service which will be held at Walker Memory Gardens on Monday, April 29 at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be held at the cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Gideons International. Please visit gideons.org to make a donation in memory of Nelda.
