He was born in Jasper on July 3, 1937 and graduated from Walker County High School in 1955. In May 1957, he married Ella Jean Dudley on the evening of her graduation from Lynn High School. Two years later he had joined the United States Army and moved his wife and newborn Machelle to Fairbanks, Alaska. He received expert level carbine skill certification and the Good Conduct Medal. After being honorably discharged from the Army as a Specialist E5, he moved his family with the addition of Terri back home to Alabama. He joined AT&T shortly thereafter and retired at age 55. He and Jean thoroughly enjoyed retirement by traveling through the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe with family and friends. He continued his passion for flying, gardening and Alabama football as long as health permitted. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2012 and colon cancer in March of this year. He was a resident at Harbor Chase Assisted Living in Huntsville. His family rejoices in knowing he was loved and will be missed by many. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial contributions to First Baptist Church of Jasper, Harbor Chase of Huntsville, or the charity of your choice.
