Anna Lewis Haynes, of Washington, PA, died peacefully on June 1st, 2013, surrounded by her family. Anna and her husband, the Rev. N. Wesley Haynes, lived with their 6 children in Montclair from 1955 to 1973. The Rev. Haynes was pastor of the First Congregational Church of Montclair for 14 years.
Anna was born November 5th, 1921 in Littleton, NH to the late Lillian Messer Lewis and the late Howard Cobliegh Lewis. After her mother's death, when Anna was just 3, her father married the late Edith Danskin in 1926, who would become her beloved mother. Anna was a graduate of Littleton High School, class of 1939 (voted best all-around student). She graduated from Plymouth Teachers College in 1943 and taught third grade in Bristol, NH and Littleton, NH.
On April 21, 1946, Anna married N. Wesley Haynes. After Wes graduated from Bangor Seminary and the University of Maine, they and their first born, Jack, moved to Winslow to begin their many years in service to the United Church of Christ. They served several churches in Maine before being called to serve at the First Congregational Church of Montclair, N.J. Following their time in Montclair, Wes continued his ministry through the UCC in several other capacities, from Haworth, NJ to Portland, ME to a year-long interim ministry in Minnesota.
After Wes's retirement, they split their time between Florida and their beloved camp in New Hampshire. They made lifelong friends wherever they lived, enjoying 64 loving years of marriage until Wes's death in 2010.
Anna had a delightful sense of humor and the ability to make fast friends among young and old. There are many young people who claimed her as their “Nana,” in addition to her own many grand and great- grandchildren. Anna enjoyed water painting, knitting, and reading, especially works on American history. She delighted in the lives of her family and friends, always enjoying a laugh over a story about something said or done by one of the many children in her life. Never one to be squeamish, she always expressed the required awe when presented with various insects or other small creatures found under rocks or caught in a lake.
Anna was preceded in death by her husband Wesley, son Peter Howard Haynes, and granddaughter Melissa Cobliegh Haynes. She is survived by her children, George W. “Jack” (Susan) Haynes of Baton Rouge, LA., Joanne (Jeffrey) DeLuca of Washington, PA., Sandra (James) Goebeler of Westerville, Ohio, Cynthia Haynes-Caswell of Belmont, MA, Allison Haynes-Perry of Barnstable, MA, and her daughter-in-law Leslie Haynes of Mechanicsburg, PA, She also leaves twenty-one grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2013, 11a.m., at the First Congregational Church UCC, in Littleton, NH. In lieu of flowers please make donations in her memory to the First Congregational Church UCC, 189 Main Street, Littleton, N.H. 03561-4020.
