Alexander K. Mitchell, “Sandy “, passed away peacefully at his home in Stuart, Florida on Friday
afternoon March 11, 2022, with family and friends by his side. He was 86 years old.
Born on January 4, 1936 in Portchester, NY to Alexander and Elsie (nee Coffin), he was the youngest of
two siblings. As a young man he traveled often with his family to Gaspe Peninsula, QC, Canada, where
his mother was born. He had very fond memories of blueberry picking, and the joys of rural life on the St
Lawrence River.
After attending school in Westchester, NY, Sandy proudly served as an Airman First Class, Aircraft
Mechanic, in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Plattsburgh, NY and Okinawa, Japan. He served honorably and developed a lifelong love of aviation and mechanics which served him well throughout his life. After discharge from the Air Force Sandy met and married Ann (Witz) of Mount Vernon, NY. They moved to New Fairfield, CT in 1964 and had two daughters, Deborah and Doreen.
Sandy worked as a milkman at Marcus Dairy in Danbury, CT until 1969 when Sandy and Ann opened
New Fairfield Mobil in New Fairfield CT, a successful auto repair and gasoline business, which is now
proudly owned and operated by the third generation, his beloved grandson Joe and daughter Deborah.
Sandy had many lifelong hobbies that showcased his mechanical skills and his sense of adventure.
He enjoyed building and constructed a KitFox airplane which he flew throughout Florida, a 1936
Mercedes, an AC Shelby Cobra and numerous 1/4 scale RC model aircraft. Sandy enjoyed flying his
Cessna 172 and was able to hear an airplane in the sky and identify the make and model simply by the
engine sound. He also enjoyed car shows with antique American cars, particularly models from the
1930’s.
Throughout his life Sandy loved the ocean, sunshine and sport fishing. He earned his US Coast Guard
captain’s license and enjoyed fishing for giant tuna in the waters off Block Island and he participated in
numerous shark tournaments out of Montauk, NY.
Sandy relocated to Florida where he opened a successful pub and invested in real estate. He loved the
tropical weather and enjoyed flying, and living the outdoor life.
Sandy often said he did everything in life that he wanted to, except to see the Grand Canyon. In 2013 he
took his daughter and grandson on a cross country RV trip and fulfilled his wish. Sandy had a favorite
book, “The Power of Positive Thinking” by Dale Carnegie, to which he attributed his life-long optimistic
outlook on life.
Sandy was preceded in death by his wife Ann, in 2013, by his daughter, Doreen in 2015 and by his
parents. He leaves behind his daughter Deborah of Sherman, CT and Stuart, FL, his grandson Joe
Mitchell of New Fairfield CT, his sister Helena “Bunni” Onorata of New Milford, CT and three nieces and
one nephew.
Sandy will be blessed at his church, cremated and his remains will be buried in the family plot at
Mountain View Cemetery, New Fairfield, CT, alongside his wife and daughter.
A Celebration of Life for friends and family will be held at Sailor’s Return Restaurant, 615 SW Anchorage Way, Stuart, FL 34994 on Wednesday, April 6 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM and also in New Fairfield, CT later this summer.
In lieu of flowers please lift a glass and toast to a life well lived, in memory of The Sanman.
