
John was born on April 22, 1920 in Amsterdam, NY. He graduated from Amsterdam High school and attended Northwestern Oklahoma College. He started a career in 1952 as town supervisor in Wells NY and chairman of the Board of Supervisors as Hamilton County Treasure in 1965 until he retired in 1987 after 22 ½ years. John has been President of the NYS County Treasurers and Finance Officers Association, Director of the Eastern Adirondack Development Commission, Member of the Lake Champlain-Lake George Regional Planning Board and was appointed by Department of Transportation to the Adirondack Highway Council which represented local government in thirteen countries.
He was a member of several organizations, the Board of Visitors of Marcy State Hospital, Wells Central School Board of Education, several Masonic orders, Wells American Legion Post, Secretary/Treasure of the Wells Fire Commissioners and member of the Wells volunteer Fire Department, Wells Improvement Group, Chairman of the Hamilton County Republican Committee.
He is survived by his wife, of 67 years, Shirley Doak Heffernan, daughter Janet and a grandson David.
He was predeceased by Brother George, Grandson John and two infant sons.
A memorial service will be held on Friday August 24th at 3:00 PM at Aycock Funeral Home, Jensen Beach, FL.
There will be a graveside service at a later date at Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam, NY.
