Joseph August “Gus” Pouliot
1924 - 2022
Joseph August “Gus” Pouliot, 98, died peacefully in his sleep on July 25, 2022 in Stuart, FL. Gus was born March 13, 1924 in Franklin, NH to Joseph Pouliot and Olivine Fradette Pouliot. He was the youngest of 8 children.
Gus grew up in Franklin, NH and spent his entire life there until retiring to Florida in 1990. He attended St. Mary’s School through grade 8 and graduated from Franklin HS, where he was president of his 1943 graduating class.
Immediately after high school Gus enlisted in the US Navy in July of 1943 and served in the Pacific Theatre of WWII as a member of the Seabees. He served on Midway Island throughout 1944 and 1945 before his discharge in 1946. After returning from the war he married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Wescott, in October, 1946. By almost any measure, Gus and Elaine were the happiest of couples for the next 68 years.
After getting married, Gus and Elaine lived in Franklin, NH for 44 more years where they raised their family. Gus worked as a linotype operator for the Laconia Evening Citizen, the area’s daily newspaper. He didn’t miss a day of work over those 44 years.
Gus enjoyed golfing, but he loved dancing. In fact, the last video of him, taken less than a week before he passed, was of him dancing with his 16 year old great granddaughter.
Gus and Elaine retired to Stuart, FL in 1990 where he lived for the past 32 years. He was surrounded by friends and his dance card was always full.
Gus is survived by his daughter, Joan Beshong, also of Stuart, FL, his son Jim of Sanibel Island, FL, five granddaughters, six great granddaughters and one great grandson. His wife, Elaine, preceded him to heaven by 7 years and they are certainly back dancing together again.
Respects can be paid at Aycock Funeral Home in Jensen Beach, FL on Thursday, July 28, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
