Our Aunt Betty Evelyn Pealer Woodson, age 84, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2020, at the Blue Ridge in Brookview Healthcare Center in Gaffney, South Carolina. She was carried away from there by the angels to her Heavenly home. She was born on May 31, 1935 in Johnson City, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Virgie Frye Pealer and John Adam Pealer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Bonnie Pealer Coffey; and two brothers, Guy and Jack Pealer.
Betty grew up in Johnson City and graduated from Science Hill High School and attended ETSU. She had a long-term career working at Home Federal Savings and Loan in Johnson City. She also worked as a secretary for several lawyers in Johnson City. During these years, she sang on TV in variety shows and for 15 years, she did concerts for the Veterans at the Veterans Theater at Mountain Home.
Through her singing and her brother Guy’s music shop, she developed country music contacts, including a friendship with Ernest Tubb who encouraged her to go to Nashville to develop a professional singing career. But it wasn’t to be, as she put her whole life on hold for many years to take care of her mother who had fallen ill from a stroke.
After the death of her mother, she married and moved to Greenville, South Carolina. She was active in her church and was privileged to go on a missionary trip to Rome, Italy using her singing talents for the Lord. She later moved to Liberty, South Carolina and became a member of the Cornerstone Community Church in Easley, South Carolina where she sang solos and sang in the Praise Team. She loved to sing for the Lord.
She is survived by nieces and nephews; her sister Bonnie’s children: Cheryl Coffey Lane, Mike Coffey, David Coffey and Larry Coffey; her brother Guy’s children: Guy Pealer, Jr., Linda Pealer Palmer and Pastor Bill Pealer; her brother Jack’s daughter Helen Pealer Anderson; and several cousins.
She will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews. We will always remember the joy, fun and love that she brought to us over the years. We love you Aunt Betty, (forever and a day).
Due to COVID-19, a private family chapel service will be held Friday, April 10, 2020 at 12:00PM at Monte Vista Funeral Home with her nephew Pastor Bill Pealer officiating. “Amazing Grace” will be sung by Betty from her CD that she made when she was 77 years old.
