Evelyn Brooks, a long-time resident of the Jonesboro area, made her transition on Sunday March 20, 2011 at home. Family and friends surrounded her when she ceased her battle with cancer. Born August 27, 1934 in Baltimore, MD to William and Lottie Harrison, Evelyn grew up in Baltimore and graduated from Fredrick Douglas High School.
Evelyn worked at John Hopkins in Baltimore and moved to Chattanooga, TN in 1964. Her employers during her time in Chattanooga included, Campbell Clinic, Alton Park Community Health Center, Dodson Avenue Health Center and Erlanger Medical Center where she worked until her retirement. Upon retirement, she moved to the Jonesboro GA area where she settled.
Evelyn loved cooking for family and friends and had a wonderful smile that could light up a room. She was a band-booster sewing countless band uniforms and headed fundraising committees. She was well loved by the numerous neighborhood children and friends who sat at her dinner table.
She is survived by her brother, Melvin Harrison and his wife Lillian Harrison of Baltimore MD. Four children Arthur H. Evelyn was an extraordinary woman who always turned nothing into something. She sacrificed everything for her family never complaining. There is no doubt she will be waiting for us in her heavenly home. Even when the pain was unbearable, she would call out to Jesus and never lost her sense of humor. The biggest disappointment was no longer being able to get in the kitchen, roll around in her chair and cook a magnificent meal. That was how she loved you.
The Tara Garden Chapel Funeral Home, Jonesboro, GA, has been entrusted with arrangements. Place of interment is Kennedy Memorial Cemetery in Ellenwood GA. The family invites all of Evelyn's friends to come and celebrate her life with them.
