Doug was a quiet, humble hero and a kind gentleman; a man of courage, honor, and integrity. He was the kind of man other men aspired to be like.
Born on May 6, 1945, in Meadville, Pennsylvania, Doug carried a lifelong curiosity and steady determination that shaped both his personal and professional life. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio.
Doug served with distinction in the United States Army Infantry as a First Lieutenant during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged. For his extraordinary bravery and sacrifice, he was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple Hearts, and the Army Commendation Medal. His service reflected a deep commitment to others and a quiet strength that defined his life.
Professionally, Doug worked in real estate management and later served as a Managing Director at Asland Capital Partners, where he was respected for his leadership, wisdom, and thoughtful approach.
Doug shared 27 wonderful years with his wife, Barbara Marquette. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who found his greatest joy in his family. He was warm and loving, always giving his full energy and attention to those around him. Around the dinner table, he was known for his humor and his ability to make others laugh.
Doug had a deep and enduring love of science fiction, reading thousands of books over the course of his life. He also loved movies, especially sharing those experiences with his family. He often attended opening nights of Star Wars films with his daughters and their children, creating lasting memories filled with excitement, laughter, and tradition.
Doug was also an avid sailor. He spent many years racing his boat, Hokusai, on the Great Lakes, where he combined his love of competition with time on the water. Later in life, he continued sailing on Long Island Sound and throughout the Caribbean islands, finding both adventure and peace at sea.
Doug also cared deeply about making a difference in the lives of others. He was especially passionate about Accion, a global nonprofit dedicated to creating economic opportunity for underserved communities; an organization whose mission closely aligned with his values of fairness, dignity, and service.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Marquette; his daughters, Sharon Miner (Drew Setter) and Heather Miner Husom (Geoff Leek); his son, Jason Ray (Kaitlin McCulley); his cherished grandchildren, Nathan Setter, Connor Setter, Ryan Husom, Fallon Setter, and Max Ray; and his constant companion Rex.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Accion (www.accion.org), in honor of Doug’s commitment to helping others and creating opportunity in the world.
Doug will be remembered for his quiet strength, his unwavering integrity, and the warmth and love he shared so freely. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and in the many lives he touched.
