1973. The garage of the house I rented right after college. Kevin is installing the crankshaft into the block of the engine of the race car in the background. We build many engines for many cars together over the years and attended many, many races as spectators when our time as racers passed. We went on things more important, our love of family, but never lost our love of racing. Our families understood when "Uncle John" and "Uncle Kevin" were off to the races.

I have known Kevin for nearly 40 years and always considered him to be a gem of a person. He was wise, kind and personable. I have been similarly blessed to have known his wife Karen for over 30 years, and as much as I think of Karen, she “married up” with Kevin.
From where I sit, God blessed them richly with many years of happiness.

I was very saddened to learn about the loss of Kevin. I knew Kevin though working with Karen, and I always knew that he was a special individual because I could see how important and loving he was to Karen. I knew Kevin through Karen's words well before I knew him personally.

I had several chances to get to know Kevin through dinners, trips and visits together as a part of our company, Orion Advisory. I will always remember Kevin as very good-natured with a quick wit and a usual penchant for laughter and fun. I will miss Kevin, yet know that his memory and legacy will endure through Karen, through his impressive family, and through his dedicated friends - all whom he cherished dearly.

What warm memories we have of seeing Kevin and Karen driving down Beach Road to Jupiter inlet in their convertible with the top down. What joy they experienced watching the ocean , drinking their coffee and watching the sunrise and waves at the ocean.

Kevin was a friend and a colleague.  The early years at the Lauderdale power plant produced many memories. The “unfortunate work stoppage of ‘73” (as Kevin coined the union strike) where we were captive for a month, is when he got the nickname “603”. Times were difficult, so Kevin decided to find a way to make things better for all of us.  He went on a clandestine mission and without going into details, life in the plant became more pleasant. We were all grateful for the ingenuity and daring of 603. During those early years, Kevin was developing his skills in combustion knowledge.  As his career progressed, he would become recognized as the company’s premier expert in boiler combustion and served as a subject matter expert to those of us in the power plants.  There was immense pressure from both management and state environmental agencies to operate with minimum emissions. He was so effective in making oil fired boilers run cleanly that every plant wanted his services.  He was known by many as the “Angel of Combustion”.  Kevin spent endless hours at the various plants doing his magic. He was the only one I would trust and he helped me out of numerous serious situations.  I will always be indebted.  During the stressful times, he knew when to lighten the mood, which we all really appreciated.  We all know he had a wonderful sense of humor.
I am super appreciative to have had Kevin as a colleague and blessed that he was a friend.  I will dearly miss him.



Like all who knew Kevin, I was shocked and very saddened to learn of his sudden passing.

I met Kevin and Karen at The Crabhouse in Jupiter in the early 2000s.   A close friend of mine and I played music there.

During their first visit, Kevin and Karen came up to us during a break and complimented us on our selection of music and told us they enjoyed listening to us.   

A friendship ensued as they became what I would call “regulars”.

Kevin’s personality was infectious.   He was genuine, had a great sense of humor, a great love for music, always had a kind word, and was, simply, a very nice man. 

He and Karen were always welcoming  and supportive when they stopped by The Crabhouse to have dinner and listen to us.

During one of their visits we shared names of bands that we liked and I told Kevin that I liked The Byrds.   He told me he really liked them as well.

On their next visit, Kevin had purchased and brought a CD of The Byrds’ Greatest Hits as gift for me.   I will always remember that very thoughtful and wonderful gesture.   

That’s the type of person he was.

His kindness abounded.  

I think anyone who had the opportunity to know and got to hang with Kevin, knew they were in the presence of a very special person.

I told Karen that she and Kevin were part of the best memories I have of playing at The Crabhouse for seven and a half years.

Kevin will truly be missed.

I fondly remember my many chats with Kevin off and on over the years at various Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) conferences, not all of them environmental in nature!  We also traded info related to our respective places of employment over the years.  I will miss seeing Kevin at the A&WMA events.  Kevin was also very supportive of my efforts related to JDRF (to find a cure for Type I diabetes, which my daughter has).  He was a kind, funny, smart, generous guy ... I'll miss him and I am very sad for Karen's and his family's loss.

I don't know if this is for friends or family or both but here we go...I'm looking at this blank screen very sad and about to tell you how much I'm going to miss my uncle who I was going to surprise at the 24 hour race at Daytona today. Words can't express how I feel so this is what I got and I'm probably gonna miss a bunch. We always enjoyed watching the races! So many things are going through my mind. I'm sad for my Mom and Karen my family and my cousins! Tracy, Erin, Christine and Tom, My heart hurts as does yours. I just saw my uncle Kevin, he had come up to my mom and dad's (Joyce and Steve) to borrow a pellet gun for some around the house animal prevention. And yes I'll leave it at that. But typical move on his behalf take matters in your own yard in your own hands. Makes sense, Aunt Karen wasn't thrilled when We were telling her how to help in the operation. Invasive species or something anyway.  We had food and wine like we always do. Great conversation until I'd look over and see my uncle Kevin dozing off, text book dinner at my mom's. I can remember jumping in his pool as a kid, being crazy with my cousins. Running into sliding glass doors (not me) well maybe once. Him talking like donal duck. Me asking to see his Army Sergeant uniform, over and over. Uncle Kevin taking me hunting in his old 2 wheel drive jeep wondering if we'd actually make it to meet my cousin Keith because the road was so muddy. Uncle Kevin was always looking after me more than a nephew. He always had kind words and positive re enforcement for me. Uncle Kevin and aunt Karen would meet me at my fishing tournaments when I was in Jupiter area. It was really nice to see them on the docks. My buddy uncle Kevin, I'm gonna miss you very much and I love you always!  See you on the water buddy, Palm Beach tournament your fishing with me, this ones for you! Aunt Karen well meet ya at the docks.

My heartfelt condolences to Karen, Traci, Erin, Christine, and Tom on their loss.
And to the other family members who will feel the absence of Kevin, Dad, Poppy in their lives. 
I met Kevin when his daughter, Erin, married my son, Ezra. 
We remember his warm hospitality and graciousness when he and Karen welcomed me and other family members to their home for Thanksgiving and other get togethers.  
May his name always be for a blessing.

We were first introduced to Kevin in 2000 when they moved into the neighborhood. Kevin and Karen became deeply involved with the neighborhood HOA. We admired Kevin for his penchant for doing things right and attention to detail. Kevin was fair and thorough in his decisions involving  the neighborhood with an eye for keeping on track for the neighborhood betterment. We admired and respected Kevin which subsequently evolved into a very good neighbor and friend. Kevin continued to give all of us notice on detail of all things important such as Air Force 1 over flights as well as NASA space station overflights.  These notices evolved into neighborhood driveway parties and celebrations which were enjoyed by all attendees. They built neighborhood togetherness and comrade. We no longer live in the neighborhood but Kevin continued to communicate with us to offer his famous Boiled Peanuts to share. Kevin was a remarkable person. He demonstrated leadership, love for his family and cultivated friendship amongst his peers.  Prayers and love go to his family. He will be missed by all.  RIP sir!

I have more memories than I have space here to share. Enough to say that we were life-long friends from high school days and that to my sons he was "Uncle Kevin", and my son Michael's Godfather, and I am "Uncle John" to his kids.  A great loss for us all.

Kevin was a special friend of mine.  Twenty years ago, Kevin encouraged me to become more involved with A&WMA by his agreeing to become Chair of the local Chapter only if I became his Vice Chair.  I have been very involved in the organization at both the local and State level ever since.  I have so enjoyed that experience and the friendship of Kevin and Karen over the last two decades.  I will truly miss you Kevin.

In shock. Kevin was an amazingly generous, energetic, charitable, accomplished, friendly man. He had passion for life and touched so many through his charitable endeavours. Connected at the hip and exuded love for Karen. Tremendous loss for the community and all that were fortunate to know him.

I was shocked when Traci, Kevin’s daughter and my long time friend called me and told me her Dad had suddenly passed. I did not know Kevin and his wife, Karen personally, but through knowing Traci, and her daughter Abby for fourteen years, I knew certain very important facts about this man. He was a man of great integrity who fiercely loved his family. He was a loved Husband , Father, Uncle, Grandfather and friend. Recently I had the opportunity to meet Kevin and Karen at a function his Granddaughter, Abby was singing at. He was so proud of her talents and who she is as a person . My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Washington family at this difficult time. 

I work with Kevin during my tenure at Port Everglades,Cutler and Turkey Point power plants .  A great friend with a wonderful outlook toward life and friendship 
I will miss you my friend 

Kevin was my best friend for almost 60 yrs. I will forever remember him as my " go to guy" for any adventure we could dream up. If it sounded like fun, he was all in. Skipping school to go to the beach, drinking moonshine to try and stay warm in his Austin Healy, dove hunting, later on there was snipe hunting, duck hunting, but above all there was dinner,wine,usually more wine and the one person I could tell ANYTHING to and not be judged. When he married Karen I could see the happiness in his eyes and that made her my second best friend. He was and is someone I will always remember as a good friend and above all just a generally good person


We were so sad to hear that Kevin had passed away,  however as neighbors for about 20 years our memories of Kevin are happy and many whether it was "pulling a cork" as he used to say, sharing some "mystery" meat from the hunt that he and Karen had both prepared, or maybe getting ready for a hurricane (or two).  We could also get a text about the space station traveling above, or join for stories around the fire pit in the yard.  He also liked sharing his record albums and would ask us to name that 70's song  on the turntable (without google) .  Mostly though, we will remember Kevin for being a wonderful person and special friend to us, we will miss him but won't forget him, we loved him, Steve & Charlotte (Doran)

I worked with Kevin, first at Port Everglades Power Plant and later on a number of projects while he was working on staff.  Always respected his great operational knowledge and loved his wit and sense of humor.  His annual wild turkey hunt adventure stories were fun to hear about and laugh along side of him.

I had the absolute honor and privledge to know and spend time with Kevin. I always called him “Uncle Kevin”, I really don’t remember how that started, probably just because it annoyed him ! Kevin was an avid outdoorsman and an absolute pleasure to share the outdoors with. He was a true sportsman and I will miss him dearly. He loved his family above all and knew he was loved by them. I will raise a toast of fine wine to honor him (he is laughing right now and saying “he wouldn’t know a fine wine if it bit him in the (fill in the blank)!!” I love you my friend...God Bless You!
