Maria (Messina) Bonventre was born on Nov 2nd, 1924 in Sicily, Italy. Born to Matteo Messina and Maria Bosco, Maria spent all of her childhood in Sicily alongside her mother. She met the love of her life at 17 years old, Pietro and they married in April 1947. She went on to have two beautiful daughters, Marie (Alastra) and Francesca (Fiordilino), and moved to the United States as a family in the 1960’s. For nearly 40 years, Maria worked diligently as a machinist in ladies clothing until moving to Jupiter, Florida in 1992. Maria shared a devoted marriage to Pietro for 65 years until his passing in 2011. Maria is survived by her two daughters Marie and Francesca, as well as 5 grandchildren, Annemarie (Scaramellino) (married to Michael), Tommy Alastra, Angela (Fiordilino) Pirrone (married to Nicholas), Vincent Fiordilino (married to Melissa), and Valerie (Fiordilino) Maslow (married to Anthony). She also was blessed to have 7 amazing Great-grandchildren, Isabella, Vincent, Matthew, Olivia, Christopher, Angelo, and Dominic. Maria was woman of great faith, devoting her time to daily prayer, attending mass weekly, and volunteering with the church. She enjoyed watching soccer, cooking, and crocheting, and would often crochet blankets for the church and many newborn babies. Most of all though, she loved spending time with her many friends and her family who all adored her. She was a true matriarch of her family. She lived independently in her home until the day she passed away at 101 years old. She will forever be missed by all who knew and loved her, and our lives were all better because of “Nonna Maria”.
Funeral mass will be held Wednesday, February 25th at 10am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Burial of her ashes will be held at a later date at Riverside Memorial Cemetery.
