Mary was born May 21, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York to Wayne and Elizabeth Ikola and was preceded in death by her husband Albert Edward Donor Jr, whom she married June 13, 1959.
Mary is survived by her three children and their families: Albert (Maria), Brian (Elaine) and Alyson (Roger) Stanley; grandchildren Gary (Sabrina) Demarco, Kimberly Demarco, Albert Donor IV, Lauren Donor, Brittany Donor and Brian Donor Jr; and great grandchildren Zane Demarco and Kaden Demarco.
Mary loved education. She earned her Masters of Science in Library from Long Island University’s Palmer School Library & Information Science in 1972. She then obtained a Masters of Business Administration from Dowling in 1973. She accomplished this while raising her 3 children. Mary leveraged this education as she started her career with Jericho Public Library in their Young Adult Services section in 1973. Ever seeking challenges, Mary changed jobs several times until she returned to Jericho Public Library as their director where she worked until her retirement. Mary was a member of various prestigious organizations such as American Library Association, New York Library Association & Long Island Coalition Against Censorship. She also had the honor of being elected to the position of President of the Nassau County Library Association in 1992.
Mary enjoyed many pastime activities through the years. She always had a flair for the arts. Early on she created meaningful pottery pieces and tried her hand in stained glass. Mary sponsored local artists and collected multiple pieces. She loved to travel and explore the world. Mary had visited almost all of the continents as she toured countries such as China, Russia, Africa, Scotland and more. She even spent a semester in London during college and traveled around Europe.
Mary enjoyed playing golf. She was a member of the women’s 18-hole club, both in New York and in West Palm Beach. Mary loved playing golf with Al. Being a librarian, she loved to read and on her long trips to and from work she would listen to audio books. Many of her Saturday’s were spent going to garage sales to discover hidden treasures she might find to add to her china and glass collection.
After retiring, she and Al moved to West Palm Beach. There she continued to play golf and start playing mahjong. Her real passion eventually appeared in the form of a dog named Loco. They named him Loco because they thought they were crazy for getting a dog at this point in their life. They had him trained to be a therapy dog and would often visit local hospitals with him. Everyone knows Loco and the special bond he shared with Mary and Al. Loco was Mary’s savior after she lost Al. Loco and her family were there to help her overcome her grief and help her cope with her debilitating illness.
Mary was an inspiration to her family, friends and peers. Her intelligence, philanthropy and beauty will be missed by all.
Services for Mary will be held January 5, 2021 at Aycock-Riverside Funeral and Cremation Center in Jupiter. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m with a short service at the end. After the service, all are welcome to join the family at the cemetery for the final goodbye where Mary will be laid to rest with Al.
The family has requested in lieu of flowers donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association in her honor.
