With heavy hearts and deep love, we announce the passing of Elizabeth Solidad Laborte (Edlao), affectionately known to many as Sweetheart, on May 16, 2025, in Kula, Maui. She was 87 years old. A cherished matriarch and the last of the Laborte bloodline in her generation, Elizabeth passed peacefully, surrounded by the love that she so freely gave throughout her life.
Born on June 5, 1937, in Lahaina, Maui, to Marcelo Laborte and Lucy Holau, Elizabeth’s life was a rich tapestry of love, resilience, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Raised in Keawe Camp alongside her siblings, she embodied the strength and spirit of a close-knit ʻohana. Together they shared dreams, hardships, laughter, and a bond that not even time could dim. Though many of her siblings—Earnest, William "Teng," Albert "Eriko," Clarence "Dong," Frank "Frankie," Benjamin "Rudy" Laborte, Virgie Balisco, and Elsie Hook—have preceded her in death, Elizabeth carried each of them in her heart and now joins them in eternal reunion.
Elizabeth was known for her radiant smile, sharp wit, and magnetic spirit that could light up any room. Her sense of humor was unforgettable—bold, unapologetic, and full of life. She was a pillar of strength for her family.
She is survived by her loving children: Michael "Tubs" Curimao, Eddie (Donna) Curimao, Matthew "Bully" (Patty) Curimao, George (Cheryl) Laikupu, Clayton Cockett, and her loving daughter Makanani (Fonte) Catugal, as well as her spouse, Herman Edlao. She is also survived by her hanai brother Junior Cuson from Oahu and many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
She was also the proud mother of the late Jonna "Ginny" Curimao, whose memory remained forever close to her heart. We find comfort in knowing they are now reunited.
Elizabeth found joy in the simple pleasures of life—whether she was playing cards with a Diet Coke and cigarette in hand, or laughing through stories shared with her ʻohana. She was a playful spirit with a competitive streak, always in good fun, always bringing joy. But more than anything, Elizabeth treasured togetherness. She believed in the power of family—of gathering, celebrating, and holding each other close through life’s ups and downs.
As we say A hui hou to our mother Sweetheart, we celebrate a life that was deeply loved and beautifully lived. Her legacy is one of love, laughter, and unity. Her presence will be missed, but her spirit lives on in every smile, every shared meal, every heartfelt laugh.
