James “MAC” McDougal Lowson, 73 of Kapalua, Maui passed away February 3, 2016 at Island Hospice, Kahului Maui. Mac died from complications of Parkinson’s Disease, Lewy Bodies Dementia and a stroke.
Born in Honolulu, HI to John M. Lowson and Betty Lowson shortly after the start of WWII, Mac attended Punahou School K-12. He graduated from Clairmont Men’s College in CA. After college, Mac returned to Hawaii and began his career as an appraiser in Honolulu. Opportunity called and he moved to Maui to start a career in real estate sales. Mac maintains many of his grade school and college friends.
Mac was married to his wife, Laurie Smith Lowson in 1994 by her father in Wisconsin. Together they continued to work as partners in their real estate company: Lowson & Associates of Lahaina.
Mac joined the Realtors Association of Maui (RAM) in 1973 and was Principal Broker of Lowson & Associates. Mac was a man of strong principles and served Hawaii’s Realtor industry and his community for many years.
Mac was RAM's President in 1997, received RAM's highest honor as Realtor of the Year in 1995, and was also awarded the Special Recognition of the Year in 2001. Mac volunteered his time on countless RAM committees, including Professional Standards & Arbitration, MLS, and Government Affairs Committee. He and Laurie are members of the National Association of REALTORS RPAC Hall of Fame.
Mac served as President of the Hawaii Association of Realtors (HAR) in 2005. Mac was chosen as the HAR, Realtor of the Year in 2007. He also led the State Association in several battles including proposed statewide raises to the GET.
Mac was a member of the Rotary Club of Lahaina for over 35 years. He served his club twice as Club President. He often joked while not being the oldest Rotarian, he certainly was the oldest as far as longevity within the club. Mac was instrumental in founding West Maui Taxpayers Association and served as the President for several years. While with WMTA, he was instrumental in the drive to build the Napili Fire Station. Mac served on the County of Maui Liquor Commission, both as chair and as a member of the commission.
Above all else Mac loved his family life. He also enjoyed: swimming, tennis, sailing, walking, golf, hiking and yoga.
Mac is survived by his loving wife, Laurie. His children Hobbs(Valerie) Lowson and Annie (Dennis) Queirolo. His grandchildren: Daisy & Enzo (Kihei) and Jescie & Jack (Guam).
A Celebration of Mac’s life will be held Saturday, February 6th at 1pm on the rooftop at 744 Front St. Lahaina. Mac was a loving, hard working, generous man, who will be truly missed by all who knew him.
