

Joseph M. Medeiros, 91, passed away on February 22, 2023. Joe, aseveryone called him, passed away at Hale Makua in Kahului under Hospice care after a brief illness.Joe was born in Paia, Maui, on May 4, 1931. His parents were Manuel and Julia Medeiros. Joe had many siblings including brothers EugeneMedeiros, Matthew Medeiros, Martin Mederios, and Emanuel Medeiros and sisters Mildred Havilla, Geraldine Bell, Shirley-Ann Wyatt, and Evelyn Sheffield. Joe married Paulette Torres Medeiros on November 10, 1989, in Las Vegas, Nevada. They lived on Oahu until 1995 and moved back to Wailuku, Maui, for the remainder of their married life.At the age of 12, Joe’s parents moved the entire family to Honolulu, Hawaii, so his father could start a new job at Pearl Harbor. Joe attended St. Louis High School and graduated from Farrington High School. Shortly after graduating, Joe enlisted in the Marines in 1948, and served his country until 1953. He served on the front lines in Korea during the Korean War.After an honorable discharge from the Marines, Joe enrolled at San Jose State and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in business administration. After graduation, Joe began his career as a manager for Woolworths in San Francisco. After 10 years in California, Joe returned to Oahu and managed the Woolworths store in Waikiki. From there, Joe began a career as a manager for the Duty Free shops in Waikiki and the Honolulu International Airport. In the late 70’s, Joe made his final professional move and became the General Merchandise Manager/VP of Merchandising with Pomare which owned and operated all of the Hilo Hattie stores throughout Hawaii. With his enthusiasm, creativity, and knowledge, Joe helped to open the Maui Tropical Plantation in 1984. Joe was known to leave many of his merchandising staff totally exhausted and out of energy, but he always had another 3 or 4 hours left in him.Joe was an active member of the Honolulu Lion’s Club, the VFW Maui, and the Elk’s Lodge of Waikiki. And if you knew Joe, you knew that he was a huge enthusiast of all University of Hawaii sports. Joe bought season passes every year for all sporting events related to the University.Joe retired at the age of 62, but his retirement was short-lived. Joe went to work part-time at the Dunes of Maui Lani golf course as a guest service attendant. Joe also volunteered his time to St. Anthony Church in Wailuku, and helped with the remodel project of Marion Hall and other beautification projects for the church.Joe is survived by the love of his life, Paulette Torres Medeiros, son Randy “Josie” (Jan) Jacintho, and daughters Donna (Demy) Malano, Robyn (Peter) Delima, and Kimberly (Wil) Cambra. He is also survived by grandchildren Brandi, Kellie, Joey, Britney, Caitlyn, Cayla, Aaron and Coby, and numerous great grandchildren. Joe is also survived by brother Emanuel Medeiros and sister Evelyn Sheffield.Joe’s service will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2023. Visitation will begin at 9:30-10:30 am, at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku, followed by mass at 11:00am. Interment to follow at Makawao Veterans Cemetery at 1:00pm.Joe’s family would like to thank the staff of the East wing of Hale Makua in Kahului and Hospice Maui, for their compassionate and loving care of him. And lastly, Joe was a friend to everyone that knew him. He was a dedicated family man with the biggest heart. To know Joe was to love him.
