

Patrick Michael “Mike” O’Kelly passed peacefully on December 13, 2024, at Hospice Hale in Hualalai on the Big Island of Hawaii, from congestive heart failure and the effects of the onset of Alzheimer's.Mike was born on July 25, 1942, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to Elizabeth Jane Wilson O’Kelly and Charles W. O’Kelly. His childhood included time spent in numerous foster homes and occasionally in the care of his beloved Aunt Meada and Uncle John, who nurtured his interest in art and music.When he was nineteen, he enlisted in the army and was stationed in Bamberg, Germany, during the Cold War. He served his country from 1961 to 1965 and received an honorable discharge.After his military service, he later used his military benefits to avail himself of training as a journeyman carpenter.In his twenties, he had a short-lived marriage to Wayneen Loftus, which resulted in the birth of his son, Michael Shea Robinson.In 1974, he met Ellen Scott and on June 25, 1977, they were married in McComb, Illinois. For the first time in his life, he felt like he had parents as he bonded with his new in-laws. In 1980, he joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which his wife had joined a couple of years earlier. In 1985, they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Mesa Arizona LDS Temple.His favorite assignment in the Church was as an Assistant Scoutmaster, as he had always wanted to be involved with the scouting program as a child. Mike loved gardening, photography, hiking, and volunteering. He was a giving, funny, perfectionist.He later trained at a culinary school, and his last job was as a pastry chef at the Scottsdale Fairmont Resort.In 2003, Mike and Ellen moved to Kona, Hawaii, where Ellen had found employment. In his retirement, he volunteered at the Office of Aging as a Senior Companion and also served at the Friendly Place, a homeless shelter.He is survived by his wife Ellen Scott O’Kelly, his son, Michael Shea Robinson, and his seven loving cats. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his parents-in-law, Adrian Bell Scott and Mabelle Mullen Scott.A celebration of life will be held on March 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the outdoor pavilion at the stake center for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 75-230 Kalani Street, Kona, Hawaii.Ellen would like to thank the Hospice of Kona, Hospice Hale, Chris Jackson, Krista Olson, the staff of West Hawaii Early Headstart, and the members of the Keei Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their help and acts of kindness at this difficult time.
