Ronald Ostrander

Ronald K. Ostrander, 72, passed away on July 17, 2017. Ron was born on March 3, 1945 to Roscoe and Helen Bingham Ostrander in Ventura, California and grew up in New York, Connecticut and Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He is survived by his wife Daphne Y.F. Chu, nephew Craig Bruntil, wife Robin, their son Taylor and daughter Emma.

A marketing and advertising executive, he worked for BBDO (Batten Barton Durstine Osborn) New York and BBDO San Francisco on such accounts as Campbell Soup and Chevron Gas under advertising legend Hal Riney

In Hawaii he served at several agencies including Seigle, Rolfs &Wood and Milici Advertising, and as Advertising Manager of First Hawaiian Bank instrumental in launching the first “Yes” campaign.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s he took a hiatus from advertising and moved to the Big Island of Hawaii working for Angus Coombs at Kona Village and marrying his first wife Sandra Coombs. He became a rancher and worked for and later partnered with Woodson K. Woods managing Mauna Kea Motors (Hawaii’s first Land Rover and Toyota dealerships), Hawaii Trails (with Eugene Ramos) and Waimea Village Inn (now part of the HPA campus).

He returned to Oahu eventually becoming CEO, partner and co-creative director of Ostrander-Chu Inc. in 1985. Some agencies were critical of his early advocacy of the U.S. Copyright Law but was supported by the photographers, illustrators and other creative people it protected- and now take for granted. The marketing, advertising and graphic design firm earned a reputation for its creative, innovative marketing and media planning, garnering numerous Pele, AICP, Ilima, Cleo and national and regional awards for advertising and marketing excellence. Clients included Whaler’s Village, 2100 Kalakaua Ave, Molokai Ranch, Kaanapali Beach Resort Assn, Castle Medical Center ( now Adventist Health)Classic Resorts, Kamehameha Schools Drug Free & Safe Communities Program, Kahala Mall, Hawaii Coffee Co. Kauai Coffee, Aloha Care, Keauhou at Makena, Kaanapali Golf Estates, Cindy’s Leis.

Political advertising included 2 campaigns for Lt Governer Mazie Hirono and print and collateral for Cayetano-Hirono; Ed Case, Susie Chun-Oakland and the Hawaii Democratic Party. Pro bono, environment, arts and educational clients include His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, The Nature Conservancy, Hawaii Public Radio, Hawaii Opera theatre, SFCA, ACLU, National Tropical Botanical Garden, Bishop Museum, Honolulu Academy of Arts, NOAA, DOE, DLNR & T, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Blind Vendors of Hawaii and Olelo.

There will be a memorial service on November 18, 2017 from 1-3p.m. at Anna Ranch, Kamuela.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hawaii Public Radio; Jeanette & Harry Weinburg Community Foundation; American Advertising Federation (AAF) Honolulu/Ad Club 2.
