On Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015 Billy Conner, also known as “Waikaloa Billy” did his final run on this earthbound course. It was a short sprint that took him through his beloved Hana town and onto the finish line at his verdant and welcoming little home near Hana Bay. Nearby supporting him were his dear friends, including Dr. John Mills, Billy’s sweetheart Jill Davis, and his beloved dog Snoop. Billy is survived by his brother Charles Conner of Maryville, Tennessee, his nephews Chris and David Conner, cousins, his partner Jill Davis and many, many friends.
Billy was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and later graduated from the University of Tennessee, of which he was a proud and lifelong fan. He moved to Maui in 1976 and became a skilled carpenter. Billy was an incredibly talented and passionate runner whose list of accomplishments include finishing 135 marathons: 38 consecutive Maui Marathons, 33 Honolulu Marathons, 13 Volcano Wilderness Trail Marathons (considered one of the toughest in the world), 13 Haleakala Run-to-the-Sun Ultramarathons (also one of the most challenging), 9 Kona Marathons, 8 Hana Relays Solo (smiling and laughing for the whole 52 mile stretch), 5 Hilo Marathons, 5 Maui Oceanfront Marathons, and many, many others. One of Billy’s lifelong dreams was to run the Boston Marathon which he qualified for six times and was preparing to do this April. Billy`s athleticism and enthusiasm also powered him around the West Maui Mountains and up Haleakala on a one-speed bike, through the X-Terra Off-Road World Championships (without getting his hair wet), and to races all over Maui and the country. When he wasn’t racing or building he was volunteering: lifting the spirits of injured triathletes at post-race medical tents, raising money for non-profits, and inspiring people to live healthy, happy lives.
Even more impressive than his myriad athletic accomplishments were the genuine openness and unconditional love of his heart, mind, and soul. Billy Conner represented the best of humanity. His sparkling eyes looked on others with compassion, his warm smile lit up rooms, his giant hugs offered sanctuary, and his sincere words offered acceptance. Billy’s kindness knew no bounds. His extraordinary presence will live on in our hearts forever. We love you Billy!
Billy Conner’s celebration of life will be held at Hana Bay at 11am on February 28, 2015.
All are welcome.
