The house I grew up in. Then had a hospital bed in the middle of our living room where just weeks ago we were playing cards together. And the dining room table covered with needles and medication. I'd still jump down the stairs like I was nine. And when he needed his morphine id stare out our front window holding a bowl of soup. Trying to eat but then I hear them holding his arm down. Saying it'll be over soon. I'd spoon feed him then when he couldn't speak you would just have to try everything to make him feel better. Couldn't suck through a straw and uncle randy and Shari had him sitting up and I went to give him water but he looked at me and his eyes rolled back. I put the glass down and went to my room to cry and plugged my ears. Brave wasn't holding your hand as you helplessly died. Brave is every waking day with knowing that I will never wake up and see you again. I think the weirdest and most surreal feeling you will ever feel in your life is the grief that hits you when you lose a parent. Sometimes you forget that they're gone. But then all of a sudden you remember and it's like someone punched you in the gut and all you can say is, why you? Rest in peace Dad. I love you. I will always love you. Seeing your name and funeral in the same sentence is heart wrenching. Its like I was on auto pilot the whole time and during the service, I don't remember a thing. Now the complete utter shock has woken me up. And there's nothing I can do. I just wish I said more to you. I watched you laugh, I saw you cry. You taught me how to ride a bike, how to drive a truck. How to love unconditionally. I saw you struggle, I tried to help you. You deserved the world and I hope heaven has now given you it at your fingertips. I wish you were still around, there's nothing I wouldn't do to see you. I will always be daddy's little girl, your little monkey. Until death reunites us again. I miss you telling me to go to the moon alice after I sing, nananana fat man! to you, I miss you gripping my head telling me you're a brain sucker and I'm hooped now. Or you chasing me down the hall with your hands out saying you're the tickle monster, even when I was 18 and WAY too old for that. Or our snack of KD and diced tomatoes. You telling me I'm full of piss and vinegar.. yet I think I got that from you. Simply just missing you Dad. Everyday you wake up. Go and get a coffee, something that seems normal to everyone else. Is actually a huge accomplishment for yourself. You got out of bed. Faced other people. Put on a smile and even engaged in conversation with others in line. It's baby steps to getting back to who you once were so fluently. There will always be a black cloud covering you as the void in my heart will never be filled, since you left us. And you left me. With so many questions unanswered. But those become irrelevant as there will never be answers. Just little baby steps. Like when you watched me take my first steps, these are a whole new steps I will also take. This time without you dad Rick Engemoen. ❤ #rip

Lived across the street on Mcgill rd for a number of years. What a blast we had together! That was in the seventies so you'll all remember the mischief involved. I remember the black light and posters , along with music blasting in Ricks room. We were sunshine boys, always outside -tanned and skinny riding the skateboards or on the beach. fabulous times Rick! I remember you well! I just came across this guestbook and glad to contribute. RIP

So sorry to hear this. I first met Rick at Hollyburn Country Club in West Van where we both played hockey on the team my Dad coached.  We both went to Sahali Junior and graduated together at Kam High. I hadnt seen him for a long time but think of those early years often.

Rick's Eulogy

Hello everyone thank you for coming to Rick's celebration of life.for those that do not know me I am Randy Engemoen  Rick's BrotherRichard, Ricky or Rick depending on the stage of life was always a fun loving guy with a quick crooked smile and funny sense of humour which sometimes got him known as MR. too much informationif you are wondering about the monkey sitting beside Rick..he always called his daughter his little monkey so when he went into the hospital a while ago Kayla brought him this monkey and it has been with him since! 
Some of you know Rick by the name  of lucky he actually got this name at an early age.we moved when we were around 4 and 5 into a house with a steep driveway.as soon as the moving truck was unloaded and moved onto the street Rick spotted his little red wagon and decided the driveway would be perfect place for a cruise down he went Mom screamed but Rick made it down the driveway even making the corner and  then there was the moving truck..believe it or not he went right under and out the other side without a scratch on him and was now known as Lucky!


When we were 10 and 11 our parents decide one summer it would be good for us to go visit Uncle Roy in Saskatoon and to go by train.I am not sure about you but 15 hours across the prairies on a train does not sound like much fun to two active boysWhen we boarded our car to start the trip our car was full of Girl Guides..Rick and I looked at each other and went Yahoo let's get this trip started.lol 


My oldest daughter got on Rick about 15 years ago about how smoking was bad for you..Rick told her no worries for you I will quit..they made a bet for a month which came way too quick for Rick and he ended up paying Kirsty $100.00While Shauna my youngest watched this she thought she better get in on the action so she got the same bet going with Rick..I believe Rick did the second bet just to even it up with the girls because that's the kind of guy he was..After he paid Shauna I tried for some of the action but was told nice try!





Rick and I worked together most of our lives in the family business at the Highlander Restaurant where we cooked and did many banquets throughout Kamloops some of those days were very long feeding large groups of people and when we finished the family would sit in the dining room and long-time friend and employee Terri would look after us as if we were good tipping customers..some of these family get togethers would end in a cocktail at the end Rick liked to light his Cointreau on fire and then drink it ..I remember one night his face and front of shirt getting covered in flaming Cointreau and mom grabbing a water jug and throwing it on him! We all had a good chuckle and it was a while before he light another one up..For the last 20 years we have worked together at the pulp mill where Rick enjoyed operating large equipment in the Chip Yard.
Rick was also a very generous person both in friendship and donating to various causes around town.one that was especially dear to him was Mothers against drunk drivers and two days before he passed he wanted to make sure I had paid his monthly donation.Kind of Ironic???...... Domtar Pulp has made a donation to Mothers against Drunk Drivers in Rick's name!
Rick will be joining our Mother Mavis Engemoen who died in 2000 and we are glad they will be together again..there is a Niche at Evergreen Mausoleum where Rick will be placed to join mom and I look forward to being able to visit both.

Growing up with older brothers can be at times a joy...or a nightmare . Luckily Rick and I were best friends from the minute I was born. Although he might say different . He was my best friend, he was my hero. He was there when I learned to walk and he helped me learn to ride a bike by pretending to be Evil Knievel jumping ramps. He taught me how to defend myself every time he punched me or wrestled me to the ground ....and he taught me the quickest way to get worms out of my shirt...after he first put them down there of course . I always felt protected when Rick was around. There is a saying about older siblings "Older siblings, the only people who will pick on you for their own entertainment and beat up anyone else who tries" . That was Rick. Nobody was allowed to pick on his little sister! As I grew a little older I became interested in boys. Rick was quick to assure me that boys did not in fact really have cooties but then joined bands with our brother Randy and our dad to build a fortress against any and all boys who dared to enter .. Of course none of my boyfriends could ever live up to my standards anyway as I always compared how they treated me to how Rick treated the women he loved. If Rick loved you, he loved you with his whole heart and could only see the good. He treated women with respect and had an unending supply of compliments that he did not hesitate to give out on a daily basis. 
 
High school came quickly where I lived under Rick's legacy. So many girls would walk up to me and say "Oh your Rick's sister. Want to hang out? Did they suddenly all want to be my friends? No it was just ploys designed to get them close to Rick. He was always the social one that people wanted to spend time with. His warmth and quirky sense of humour were irresistible. His legacy didn't end there. I remember the first day I walked nervously into my grade 11 PE class. Mr Nicorak called my name then said "I hope you're going to show up more than your brother did?...... I was so angry that he had said something unkind about my brother in front of the whole class so I worked harder that year then I had ever done in a gym class just to spite him. So thank you Rick for also giving me motivation ..  Rick and I spent many teenage nights together at one party or another, as many of you probably remember. My favorite memory from those parties is the night that he dropped me off at home after a party and then drove around the block before coming in himself so our parents wouldn't know he had taken me out with him. As I was climbing in my bedroom window our dog started barking, I quickly leaned down to quiet her and fell to the ground breaking my arm. My mom came running into my room asking me what was happening. There I was sitting on my bed holding my oddly bent arm wearing a ski jacket. Rick walked in just as I said "I fell out of bed". Obviously my mom didn't believe me and she decided to wait until morning to take me to the hospital. Rick sat with me the whole night talking to me and trying to distract me from the pain. We laughed about that night for years and I never forgot how kind he had been. That was Rick just the right combination of fun and kindness.
 
Eventually we all grew up and left home. I got married and had my daughter who has since had two children of her own. Rick was as wonderful of an uncle and great uncle as he was a brother. He was the goofy fun one that makes the parents look stuffy and boring .. At family gatherings all the adults would be sitting around talking but not Rick, he always took the time to talk and goof around with the kids. He always had some silly joke or magic trick to share with them and was the one to teach them every weird noise they know how to make with their bodies .. 
 
Rick and I had a bond that is hard to explain. Only those who were closest to us can understand. No matter how much time we spent together or we spent apart we always knew how much we each loved the other. The minute we were together it felt like we had never been apart and we would be right back to the closeness we always felt. I was always so proud of Rick, for his strong work ethic, being a genuine person and his warmth, his love of animals, and the love he showed towards his daughter, his nieces, and his great nephews. He never hesitated to extend a compliment to someone to brighten their day or to express his pride in one of us for getting a promotion or for taking a chance. 
 
I feel lost without him in life. I feel as if half of me has been taken away forever and I'm not sure if I'll ever feel whole again. He was my brother, my childhood playmate, my partner in crime, my protector, and my best friend. I miss his smile, his laugh, our long conversations, and most of all his "squeeze the air out of me" tight loving hug he always gave me. 
 
I have always looked up to you Rick and been proud to call you my brother. I am so blessed to have gotten the chance to be your little sister and grateful to have been at your side as you took your last breath so I could say goodbye.

So sorry for your loss. Many memories from when I was a kid camping and learning to knee board out on the lake. Stay strong Kayla.

I am so sorry to here about ricks passing  I dated rick years ago I met all of you , spent thanksgiving dinner with you , I loved all of you . my thoughts are with all of you .

So sorry to hear about Rick's passing.  Impossible to think of him without a smile on his face.  I have lots of great memories of fun times with Rick and the cousins as kids.  My sympathies to his family.
