June 9, 1928 – April 11, 2025
Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Great-Great-Grandmother, Sister, and Aunt
Helen S. Okamura, a cherished matriarch and generous soul, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, at the age of 96. Born and raised in Hawaii on June 9, 1928, Helen lived a life marked by kindness, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to her family and community.
She was a devoted mother to Lance Okamura (Gloria) and Merna Okamura (Nelson Ayers), and a proud grandmother to Merlyne Higa Polete (Nathan), Richelle Higa Driskill (Neil), and Loren Okamura. Helen’s legacy continues through her six beloved great-grandchildren—Kalia Polete, Elijah Polete, Chante Higa-Nakamura, Spencer Gray, Shayde Nakamura, and Saxon Okamura—as well as three precious great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving brother, Bert Yano, along with many nieces and nephews ...
Family was the heart of Helen’s life. She never missed a chance to visit her loved ones, often riding the bus just to spend time together. She was especially known for her incredible cooking—most famously, her homemade shrimp tempura, onion rings, and maki sushi. No one could quite duplicate them, and they became a signature of her love and care.
A woman of deep compassion and generosity, Helen supported numerous charitable organizations throughout her life, including Easter Seals, Boys Town, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Her giving spirit touched many and exemplified the values she held dear.
Private services will be held. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Helen’s memory are encouraged to donate to their favorite charity.
Please feel free to share your memories of Helen with the family—your stories, reflections, and kind words are deeply appreciated as we celebrate her extraordinary life.
