

Paul “Buddy” K. Johnston of Mountain View was called to heaven on February 2nd, 2023 in Hilo, Hawaii. He was born in Heeia, Oahu on June 26, 1930 to the late Ted Johnston and Justina Johnston (Kukahiwa). He was a brother to Edith Paauhau Henriques, Dorothy Johnston Beyer, Ida Mae Ornellas, Virginia Gina Johnston Bly, Ted Guy Johnston, Hugh Gabriel Johnston, William Kalani Johnston. Paul was the last surviving sibling.
Buddy was a retired Army veteran and served in both the Korean and Vietnam war. He also retired from the City and County of Honolulu’s Park and Recreation. He was an active member in the community wearing many hats: Football coach at Castle High School, Hilo High School, Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii Island, and for a handful of pop warner teams; substitute history teacher; and ROTC instructor at St. Louis School and the University of Hawaii.
He is survived by his wife Maureen Johnston; children: Renee Smith (Ben), Roz Saizon (Wes), and Eric Johnston (Lana); grandchildren: Nahaku Oyama (Ryan), Kawika Smith, Ikaika Johnston, Ku’ulei Johnston, Lehua Ching (Kalei), Aulani Saizon, Kapua Saizon; and 17 great grandchildren.
