

He was raised in Kalihi, where he and his siblings were active in the Kauluwela Salvation Army music program. Following graduation from Farrington High School he enlisted with the US Air Force and served in the Air Force Band for 4 years. He then attended the University of Hawaii where he graduated with a Bachelors of Education in Secondary Music, and met fellow musician and love of his life, Doreen.
Sam continued to pursue his passion for music as he played the trombone with the Honolulu Symphony for 6 years and became a well-known and beloved Band Director at Niu Valley Intermediate School, where he taught for 27 years. One of his proudest accomplishments was being honored as an outstanding teacher by the Hawaii State Senate.
Sam is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doreen, children Diane (Doug) Campbell, Stephen (Pattie) Aranio, and Elise Gakiya as well as 8 grandchildren (Davis, Donovan, Alyssa, Drew, Chad, Makena, Shayna, and Kayci) and 2 great-granddaughters (Abigail and Juliette). He is also survived by sisters, Lydia (Robert) Rebar, Ruth (Jack) Wuest, and sister-in-law Jackie Lovin-Yap.
The Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at 10:00 am at Kaimuki Christian Church, 1117 Koko Head Avenue. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am.
