Delbert “Butch” Edward Coffelt Jr, of Edwardsville, Kansas peacefully passed away January 6, 2022 within the comfort of his own home. Born on November 12, 1941, Delbert enjoyed 80 amazing years prior to his passing. Service will be conducted Saturday, January 8th,at 10am, at Chapel Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. With his passing, Delbert will now happily join his father, the late Delbert Edward Coffelt Sr. and his late mother, Ruth Mary (Macon) Coffelt. Delbert, a lifelong Kansas City, Kansas native, graduated from Washington High School in 1962.
Delbert could accomplish anything he set his mind to. At a very early age, he could be found tinkering around in the tool shed and turning wrenches. If it had a motor, he was sure to find a way to make it go and was known to often make it go faster. Not only was the “blue collar” work ethic instilled in him at an early age, but it also allowed him to build his dream lake house in Warsaw, where Delbert spent a good portion of his life. Beyond being a handyman, Delbert thoroughly enjoyed Greyhound Dog Racing, and could often be found at the local Woodlands racetrack. Dogs in general were a common theme throughout his life. He found love and comfort in his own “greyhound” Alana, who provided him with the companionship any dog lover seeks.
In addition to the many hobbies he had, Delbert was also an extremely intelligent mind. He worked for 37 years at CB&Q, now known as Burlington Northern, even achieving the Instructor status, before enjoying the retired life.
Living the life he loved, there was not a Daytona Beach week from 1970 – 2008 without him in attendance. During race day, those around him knew to stay quiet so he could enjoy the race. And enjoy the race he did. When not traveling to Florida to enjoy the big races he spent countless Friday nights posted along the fence under the lights of Lakeside Speedway. The love of racing didn’t come just from the circle track, Delbert also enjoyed the drag strip, as a frequent driver of the funny car “Pandemonium”.
Delbert lived the life of a simple man while carrying a sparkle in his eye. The rough and tough exterior iron clad in cigar smoke with the softest heart secured underneath. In everything he did he was eager to share his success and memories with family and friends. He took pride in being a father, a papa, and a great papa.
Delbert is survived by his daughter Tricia “Patty” (Larry) Brown of Edwardsville, KS; his brother Ken (Patti) Coffelt of Shawnee, KS; his two granddaughters Jessica (Philip) Smith of Tonganoxie, KS, Jennifer Sullivan (Derek Green) of Basehor, KS and his four great grandchildren Makayla, Braylyn, Emma, and Audrey.
A visitation for Delbert will be held Saturday, January 8, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Chapel Hill - Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street, Kansas City, KS 66112, followed by a funeral service from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
