Douglas Jewell Russ

Doug was born December 9, 1939, in Central City, Kentucky. to James Collier Russ and Bonita Russ (Smith). In 1962 Doug met Gloria Sue (Kimmel), and together they raised two children Douglas Jewel “Doug” Russ II and Neona Russ.

Doug had many jobs throughout his life but settled into becoming a baker after working at Wolferman’s Bakery. After Wolferman's closed their doors and left the Kansas City area, he began working at Continental Bakery where he joined the Bakery and Confectionary Union. He worked at several different bakeries throughout his life including Butternut Bread, Tasty Bread, and briefly at American Beauty making pasta.

Doug loved the open road, especially when experienced from the saddle of his Harley Davidson. His favorite adventure spots were the Rocky Mountains and the Smokey Mountains. His sense of adventure was gifted to his children and grandchildren. Doug was also an avid antique collector. Many early mornings he could be found searching for lost and forgotten treasures at thrift shops, swap meets and garage sales, often with his grandkids in tow.

Doug is preceded in death by his beloved wife Gloria Sue Russ, parents James and Bonita Russ, siblings Gary Russ, Jimmie Russ, Anita Jean Armes, nephews Chris Hall, Kirk Russ, and nieces Michelle Gray and Jeannie Varble.

Doug is survived by his children, Douglas Jewel Russ II (Kerry Peres) and Neona Russ; his grandchildren Douglas Jewel “Rusty” Russ III (Betty Russ), Eric Calovich (Vanessa Calovich), Emery Calovich, Gregory Russ (Michelle Laming), Kiera John (Christopher John), Elizabeth Daniels (Mitchell Daniels), Nicholas Calovich; great grandchildren ArMonte Woart, Maliyah Woart, Genavecia Lindsey, Ryder Russ, Holly Perkins, Remi Russ, Yuri Calovich, Christopher John II, Wesley Calovich, Kaslynn John, and Mason Daniels; siblings Glenda Gray, Sue Cobb (Charles, deceased), Patty Hamby (Danny, deceased), Jerry Russ (Judy), Nancy Hall, Sheila Goodge (Bob), Teresa Thomas (Harvey Charles).

Memorial services will be held Friday July 18, 2025, with visitation beginning at 10:00am and funeral services beginning at 12:00pm both at Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens 701 N 94th St, Kansas City, KS 66112.
