Herbert “Smitty” Smith, 89, of Blue Springs, Missouri, returned to our Lord on Friday evening, August 17, 2018 at Saint Mary’s Medical Center, while surrounded by his loving family. Services will be 11:00am Saturday, August 25th, at The Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 North 94th Street in Kansas City, Kansas. The services will end at the funeral home, but the interment will later take place in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Visitation for Smitty will be from 10:00am to 11:00am Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests that any contributions be made to the American Heart Association.
Smitty was born on December 26, 1928 to Issac and Pearl Smith, in Tonganoxie, Kansas. He lived most of his life in Wyandotte County, Kansas until the late 1970’s, when he moved to Blue Springs, Missouri. He worked as both a Lineman and Equipment Operator for Kansas City Power and Light Company for 44 years before his retirement. Smitty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Springs, and a former member of Judson Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kansas. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and a Loyal Fan of both the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas City Chiefs. Smitty loved to stay busy, especially when it came to working with his hands. He enjoyed yard work, woodworking, carpentry, collecting coins and auto repair. He was a real Family Man who loved spending time his loved ones, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He could often be found entertaining them, doing almost anything from sled riding to fishing off of his pontoon boat.
Smitty was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, and 1 sister.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 68 years, Jean Smith; 3 children, Don Smith, Sherri Phillips and her husband Gary, and Nancy Smith; his sister, Faye McRae; 6 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
