Joseph Edwin McCoy of Basehor, KS passed away peacefully at Providence Medical Center on Tuesday, February 16, 2021. Joe was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur, business owner, philanthropist, horseman and friend. His constant positivity and generosity had a profound effect on everyone he met. He will surely be missed by his family and friends.
Joe spent his entire life in the Kansas City Metro area, and loved his home town. He was born on February 16, 1948 in Kansas City, KS to his parents Rolla “Barney” and Dorothy (Thomas) McCoy, and grew up in Kansas City, KS with his 5 brothers James, John, Robert, Richard and Patrick. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1966, and attended Kansas City KS Community College. In 1970 he went to work with his brother John as a partner at McCoy Sales Company a manufacturer representative in the plumbing industry. In 1976 Joe and John enlisted the help of their brothers to purchase Orion Fittings a plastic pipe and fittings manufacturing and sales operation which they ran together until selling the company in 2004. In 2008 Joe recruited his son Jeff to take the reins at McCoy Sales Company as he transitioned to semi-retirement. Joe was a giant in the plumbing industry both locally through his work at McCoy Sales Company, and nationally through his work at Orion Fittings.
Joe approached life with gusto and always had a smile on his face. He had a contagious laugh that would fill a room. Throughout his life family always came first, and he had a selfless nature that always put others ahead of his needs or wants. You could always depend on Joe to be there with advice, support or help no matter the situation. Joe had a lasting effect on everyone he came in contact with, and he left this world a better place than he found it. As he moved into his retirement years his greatest pride was his four grandchildren. He loved going to their school events, games and enjoyed fishing with them at his house. They loved their grandpa too, and they will miss him dearly.
Joe was preceded in death by his father and mother, and his siblings James McCoy, Robert McCoy and Patrick McCoy. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 16 years Linda McCoy; brothers, John (Claudette) McCoy and Richard (Amanda) McCoy; son, Jeff (Sarah) McCoy; step son, John Forbes; and grandchildren, Charlie, Mimi, and Ruby Jean McCoy and Logan Forbes.
