Michael Freeman

Michael A. “Mike” Freeman, 60, of Kansas City, KS, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at KU Medical Center after complications from a bone marrow transplant. Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, July 2, 2010 at the Chapel Hill-Butler Funeral Home, 701 N. 94th Street, KCK. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society.

Mike was born on July 3, 1949 to Everett and Rose Freeman, and they precede him in death. A 1967 graduate of Washington High School, Mike decided on a career in law enforcement that matched well with his strong regard for right and wrong. Mike retired in 2009 from the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Department as a decorated Captain after 35 years of service. Early in his career, while a jailor at the county jail, he received a rare Gold Award for Valor for his actions in preventing a breakout by 2 inmates and was wounded in the altercation. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and had many jobs with the Sherriff’s Department over the years, as well as involvement in many cases and Metro Squads.

Outside the job, Mike enjoyed good music, good books, singing with friends and writing. He wrote several insightful short stories and music lyrics. The wit and style in his writing will be missed by the many family and friends with whom he regularly communicated. What he was known best for however, was the wise council he gave to so many over the years.

Mike is survived by his wife of 25 years, Terry Freeman of the home; brothers, Everett and wife Bobie Freeman of Kaneohe, HI, and John and wife Cher Freeman of Moberly, MO; and sister, Carolyn Barnett of Kansas City, KS. He also leaves 2 step-sons, John and wife Angie Crocker, and Richard Crocker, all from the Kansas City Area; 3 grandchildren; and 8 nieces and nephews.
